Flights between UK and US affected.

Alert

Security at all airports in the UK has been tightened and delays are expected. MI5 has raised the UK threat level to critical - the highest possible.

According to MI5's website, critical threat level means "an attack is expected imminently and indicates an extremely high level of threat to the UK".

You got links or something? I live under a rock, I don't know what's going on.

Sorry, got distracted;)

The thought of having to put my camera in the hold just makes me shiver.

How much do they actually search hand luggage in UK and the US? I remember 2 years ago I was on an interstate flight here in Australia and everything of mine was thoroughly searched. Even my camera bag was totally searched (everything emptied). How much of a chance is there to actually take a bomb on board in hand luggage these days?

It is on fox news right now.

The threat was as many as 20 commercial jets to be exploded in mid-air or over cities including the USA.
Man, this along with all the talk about August 22. Kind of scary!

On a practical level, this means THIS.

Anything else is speculation.

Here's a link for you - BBC NEWS.

Because of an identified threat, no hand luggage is currently being allowed on UK->US flights (not sure if the same is true in the other direction).

Passengers have to transfer hand luggage to the hold and can only take essential stuff like medicine.

Not even books, so definitely no cameras.

Not sure how long this will continue, so if you are planning a flight across the pond, I'd plan to pack your camera in the hold.

I love this line from the Guardian commentary:
"This sort of quasi-religious scaremongering always finds a receptive audience in the United States, especially among Christians of the jihadist persuasion."

Oh don't get me wrong I don't believe anyone can predict the end of the world. The Bible states that but you can see the world getting more chaotic with each day that passes. And yes I'm a Christian.

I'm not religious at all but yes, it definately is getting more chaotic!

No hand luggage allowed on ANY flights leaving the UK, at the moment.

Hmm... there's pretty much no way I'd trust hundreds of pounds worth of reasonably delicate gear to the hold; I've seen the damage done to hard cases and I've had much less fragile stuff broken after being very carefully packed.

Still, I guess I'll just hope they sort themselves out by the next time we're flying off somewhere!

Usually in the UK and most European airports, there is just an X-ray scan of handluggage and the detectors to walk through. I have often had my boots specially checked and some airports seem more careful than others.

It appears that this threat has been discovered which is a relief but all flights coming in and out of the UK are subject to the restrictions on hand luggage not just to the US. This is one of the busiest periods for holiday travel in the UK so the disruption will be immense. I am very pleased none of my family are due to fly anywhere this week and hopefully the terrorists concerned have already been apprehended. Sadly one report refers to them being British.

They usually rely on high def x-ray scanning of hand luggage, and ultra strong (film wiping) scanning of hold luggage.

The risk appears to be related to liquid bombs - no liquids (even prescription medicine) may be taken as hand luggage. Babies' milk must be tasted by the guardian (!) in front of security before being allowed on board.

The radio this morning also noted that the bombing was not planned for today, but that they decided to move in on the (UK born) activists today that they knew about - the problem is that there may be more people that they don't know about.

It is a tricky situation for the police - go in too early, and there is no evidence to prosecute with. Too late and people are in danger. [ - although I would still rather endure this difficulty than allow people to be detained without evidence of wrongdoing].

Rather amusingly (in a sad way) Belgium has stopped all flights to the UK.

The latest news from the BBC is that there was some recent discovery that pushed the authorities into taking action against the people they had been watching for a long period of time. They felt that the plot was moving forward and that the planes would be targeted within the next week or two ( not today particularly). 21 people arrested in London and the MIdlands. Called a global investigation and advice being given that disruption will continue for some time. The plan appears to have been to blow up 9 planes simultaneously in mid flight.

when i flew to NYC a few weeks ago, i had all my camera gear in a mini-trekker, and there was significant concern at both airports about how my equipment showed up, especially my 24-70 and my 70-200. although it didn't happen to me, i've had friends in similar situations have the security personnel open their bags, remove lense caps, and peer through...it all depends.

IMHO What a huge overreaction this 'no handbags' thing is.

What's next, no bags on trains also? Derailing a TGV at high speed claims just as many lives as blowing up a jumbo. We have already seen a smal example of what happened in Madrid. Yet they don't check my bag at the trainstation.
X-raying, opening the bags, checking stuff. Isn't that sufficient? Or can the security personell not recognize a 70-200 lens from a rocket launcher, milk from explosives, etc, etc. So my 70-200 might be a bomb they say, so I should pack it in my normal luggage. As if carrying it in the hold won't do any damage if it indeed turns out to be a bomb (we are talking about an object they don't trust after x-ray and eye check, but should be let trough after just a similar x-ray scan of the normal luggage). This goes to far.

Not to mention the extra time it takes. Airport hell.

I just flew back from Scotland 2 weekends ago. They asked a lot more questions regarding whether your luggage had been out of your control, and specifically mentioned the risk that someone had placed something in your luggage. They also specifically referenced Lockerbie as an example of it having happened. Oh - and also if you had any battery-operated equipment in your luggage or carryons.

I travel a lot within the states, but not that often across the pond. Their questioning may be a lot more direct than TSA's, but at the time, it seemed awfully paranoid. Now I know why.
