I am required to submit a thumbnail under 4KB for a contest, but Photoshop won't save files as less than 4.5. Even when it says (in Save for Web) that the file is 1 or 2 KB, it still creates a 4.5KB file. AACK, why??

I am on Mac OS X, Photoshop CS Version 8. The problem occurs for both jpegs and gifs.

Back off on the quality by 1 or 2 and it will probably go through. Make sure you have flatten layers to save space.

I've gone all the way down to the lowest quality setting, still no go. Also tried reducing the number of colors to 4, still no, even though the Save for Web window shows a size of only 1K.

What are the pixel dimensions of your file? I just created a 150x100 image and it saves at 3.9K at 50% quality.

Your image may be too large to fit into 4k

File info:
100x46 pixels
4 colors
GIF
no layers
Optimize to... set at 2 k

It is possible that the file itself is under the limit, but they way your OS maps your hard disk uses 4.5K blocks, thereby making the file look as though it's actually 4.5K. Try uploading it here and let us take a look.

Also, try JPEG instead of GIF... GIF files are notorious for being wastes of space.

Do you have another prgram you can try and use?

I'm also using a Mac but with Photoshop CS2. I think you are being confused by the difference between "size on disk" and the actual file size. Space on the disk is used in "chunks" (sectors) that are probably 4K in size--you can't actually use less than that. But the true file size can be less; the rest of the sector is just left empty. I just created a test file using save for web. It shows a size on disk of 4KB but just 3040 bytes as the file size (using Getinfo).

I think the files you are creating will be accepted as being under 4KB. When you send the file to someone, it just sends the content part, not the blank area at the end of the sector.

I'd be glad to have you email the file to me at:

Dan.Wheeler@uc.edu

I'll take a look at it and see what size it seems to be on my system. If it is actually too big, I'll try to make a smaller version and send it back to you.

It does, in fact, appear to be my disk allocation that's messing me up. The file appears as "4.5 KB (1086 bytes)" in the properties window.

Thanks for all the help, I'll let you know if I win :)

for small files your much better off using the Save for Web (alt(option)+shift+ctrl(command)+s)
