Here are a few I thought were underrated.

Some may be numerically in a higher bracket than typical underrateds but this just means I expected it to be even higher than it ended up. :)

by pidge - I tickles me that she noted it as uncreative yet I find so much to enjoy! How different we all are!

by Artyste - cliche or not, its gorgeous.

by VinceDoss - Sublime.

by bucket - I'm surprised it wasn't higher, but that's zen for ya!

What photos in the challenge (other than your own!) do you consider to be underrated?

Very simple, but you have to adjust your perception. Still it's not a mystery. That's about as zen as I saw in the challenge. 93rd

The tree here is another koan-like element. There may be faults in the composition, but everything's subdued in the right way...

How's this for breaking the rules? I tended to mark down for bright colour, for obvious literary content, for fussy content (noise, in the picture and not the pixel context) and for the inclusion of people. Having consumately fallen at every hurdle then, this picture nevertheless pulls it of with a sublime stillness in the composition of the two curves.

I am just so disappointed with my results for the "Zen" challenge, with my image called "Ying & Yang the Balance of Nature".

I was just so very happy with it and wonder why my score was at 5.507, with 32/4's,10/3's & 2/1's.....
My comments were really quite good and received a good mumber of 10's 9's & 8's.
Some of the comments I received, I will quote some here.....
this is superb...you have created interest by the different direction of the leaves (?) ove the colour and the composition 9.
Very nice work. Great idea to cross the lines. Excellent composition, great colors and fits the challenge perfectly. I hope (and expect) this one to do well for you (whoever this may be). Bumping up.
love the different patterns of lines! the coloring is so soft and peaceful!
rediculously underrated. maybe if you had rotated it 90 or 45 degrees ccw it would have stood out a bit more. 8 from me.

These are just a few of my comments.....

Maybe these would have got a better result re the softness..... I am just a little confused but not bitter in anyway as there were some excellent images in this challange.

Ordered by my vote, all of these were on my front page but managed not to crack the top 10.

At least it ended up breaking 5. Between this and my 'glowy' Enigma shot in BW Color I have learned my lesson. Soft focus for effect = bad scores (not saying either one were great photos, but the bulk of the comments were about focus).

A few that haven't been mentioned..I would call them understated..subtle and beautiful....

and this one, by some insignificant artist....

I thought your shot was well done and spot on for the challenge.

I think this challenge was difficult since most voters look for a "wow" factor and that conflicts with the subtleness of Zen photography, IMO.

Several of the top 20 entries, while all good, don't strike me as Zen. They are well done, beautiful images and that is what does well here. But then, who am I to say what Zen is? ;-)

Nice shot Sherpet!

this one should have been first place! :D

@ Sherpet: first of all, I don't mean to be rude or anything! Please keep that in mind.

You've been photographing plants for a while now (and you can do it very good!), but maybe voters "have seen" it. You've entered several plant-photos, maybe it's time for something new? For example, your apple in the gold challenge was a refreshing entry from you. Keep surprising the voters.

Just a thought :)

First of all I am surprised you think like this.
I have actually entered 11 challenge entries of either flowers or plants, out of 45 challenge entries.
I like you to also remember, I am now finding it harder to get about without a walker, so I am now restricted to taking image at home, or in the gardens surrounding me. My health may stop me from photographing all together, and that is something I don't look forward to.
I may actually have to give it all, up long before I want to, as in the past six months I have found it imcreasingly harder to cope with the restrictions placed on me.
I also would like to point out that they are quite a number of DPC members who stay in their signiture style of images as that is what they do best, and are known for it, as this is there best photography.
I am going to take a break for awhile, as I feel that there could be many others that think like you, and it just isn't worth it. I am not hurt, but just so disappointed.

Shez, please don't take it so seriously. Not everyone is aware of your condition, and not every opinion represents a community consensus. You just keep on doing what you do as long as you are capable of doing it, ok? I'd hate to see you stop.

I have received comments like that many times re: my marsh, sunset, and skiff shots, and it has never stopped me from making them :-)

I'm sorry, I did know about your health condition, but it slipped my mind.
This was just a thought, like I stated at the end of my post, just trying to be helpful and trying to understand why your score were so dissapointing for you.
I hope my post isn't gonna make you stop entering, like Bear said: this might be only my opinion.
I do happen to know how much fun you get out of photography, please, don't stop just because of my post.
I'm NOT a mean person, I don't even have a mean bone in my body, and it was never my intention to make you dissapointed.

These were my 2 10s:

by agenkin

by ralphnev

I almost slip into a meditative state just looking at them.

This was a horribly subjective challenge for me. I feel like I was bad to some really lovely images just because they didn't feel zen to me. But someone very smart like raish can come along and explain why the picture is zen after all.

I think the truly zen thing would have been to vote everything a 5.

I agree that this image was interesting, but I found it difficult to look at. The two highlights, at opposing ends of the image, made it difficult to "settle" in on this. JMO.

edit to add: I guess I made my observation/opinion public not to bring down this image but to see why/what other's liked about it. Am I totally off base with the image being hard to focus on?

Agreed. It makes my eyes "uncross," pointing in opposite directions, much as master Bart did in the Zen Golf episode of the Simpsons.

Dear Sherpet,

Please don't be too disappointed in your score - I always feel if one of my pictures ends up anywhere around the middle that I've done quite, quite well.

I thought this picture might be yours while voting on the challenge, I recognize and like your style! However, this picture just doesn't say "Zen" to me - the palm frond in the front of the picture is almost like a hand over your face preventing you from seeing what is behind. To me, that palm frond in the front just really made it seem like something that was blocking my vision and preventing me from seeing - which is very UNzen.

I hope so much that you won't feel disappointed and stop taking pictures around your house and garden for challenges - lots and lots of people on DPC get known for taking certain types of pictures; bearmusic and his marshes, Zoomdak and his Canon Beach, Me and my dunes!!

Photography brings you such pleasure, I hope you don't give it up till it is actually a physical impossibility for you. Please don't feel upset or disappointed today about your picture or reading the threads.

Your Friend,
Sammie
