That's not true. I like negative commments as they teach me. My Stopped Motion image has had some useful comments that point out aspects the voters can see improvement to be made. I want more of those comments - how else do I learn on this site?

You can also learn by commenting more yourself. At least that's what I think. Or you could take up golf... that's my plan. More golf.

I do try. My comments give/received ratio is 3:1 and I try to comment more on images that I score low rather than the ones that are my top picks. As for golf, it's winter here at the moment, scrabble may be a better option :)

Then you're doing the right thing. Except maybe for the scrabble part.

I've got two comments on my Stopped Action so far. I don't expect a lot more. I suspect the score is about 5.3. I suspect that's about what it deserves, too. It's hard to look at your own shots and honestly critique 'em sometimes, though.

Man, I don't know if I went about the challenge wrong, or if the composition is just incorrect. It seems as though a lot of entries went for the "Impression" of stop motion, as opposed to the actual act of capturing live motion in a comletely "freeze frame" state.

Since I'm kinda new, could someone let me know how this is done? Should I take the challenge as literal, and try to capture motion in a frozen state, or should I try to take a shot that "implies" frozen motion.

I can stage almost any shot, but I took this to mean capturing live motion.

It's entirely up to you. if you think staged shots don't deserve scores as high as unstagged ones then feel free to mark them lower. the trick will be in clearly identifying the staged ones from the "real" ones - you may end up marking down "real" shots by accident.

this is the description of the challenge- "Catch your subject mid-action -- that means no motion trails! Let's see how well your timing meets your creativity"... doesn't say anything about being set up or not..but vote however you think is best. :)

The only time they don't is if they get a comment they like. Really what you have to do is give a comment that "reads the mind" of the photographer and tells them exactly how "they feel" about the picture in thier own mind. Then they will be happy.

I prefer to get honest comments...if it's crap, it's crap, no matter what kind of wrapper you put on it. I asked for a comment on a photo and boy did I get one. Being new to this digital world...I found out how to improve my uploaded images and get the best quality. I did not really know about the tutorials at the time. My scores are improving in the challenges based on some of the advice that I have received, however, I had to solicite the comments. If I am getting 5's or better, great, but if you are giving me a 4 or lower, why? Not much to ask.

Just make sure you do the same that you're asking others to - if you vote a picture 4 or 5, make sure you explain why. By doing so, you often begin to see things in your own pictures to improve upon.

All over it. That is pretty much the way I have been for all challenges that I vote in....and I leave comments on the one's that I think are totally awesome as well. Most of these shots are fantastic and I am just trying to follow in the footsteps of greatness...so to speak:)

Just an update:

I've received an email from admin, basically stating that they believe that I'm trying to "ALTER MY STATS" in regard to comments, stating something about how it affects invitationals.

First off, I knew nothing about there even being an invitational until this recent email, and second of all, even IF I knew about them, does anyone here (look at my profile) believe that I am ready for a challenge of that caliber? I know I'm not, and it's pretty easy for anyone else to figure that fact out too. Yeah, like I might try to enter an invitational with my Canon Powershot point and click camera. And thirdly, why should it be a BAD thing to try to leave a comment for each and every person in a challenge, and have to fear being accused this way?

Well, if anyone wants more information at this point, feel free to contact me. But they have basically told me (after accusing me of the above) that if I do this again, there will be "restrictions".

I told them that I stand by my right to make any comments that I feel are given in the good spirit of the challenge, until they write a rule otherwise.

In fact, I'd encourage everyone to read their FAQs on leaving comments:

How do comments work?
Voters are highly encouraged to leave comments on photographs. During voting, simply type your comment in the space provided, and then click your vote. You may adjust your comments later.

After voting, you can add more comments on the photograph and see what others said about the photograph as well. As this site focuses on learning, please keep all comments constructive. Try to help the photographer with comments like how to improve the work or how to make it more appealing. Leaving comments also helps your own photography skills, as it teaches you to look at your own work more critically.

If I have broken any of that, I apologize. But to wrongfully accuse me of doing something like what they are trying to say that I'm doing, is just plain wrong, and plain misuse of administrative power. As the facts state: TRY to leave something that helps, and I have gone back in a second time, and TRIED to leave more detailed comments, as my personal time permitted. Many of you have received these more detailed comments, and know that I have TRIED, as DPC's FAQs state.

So, a word of warning, since it appears that my days here are numbered to about one more:

Leaving too many comments is going to get you in trouble for altering your stats.

Good luck to all of you in the event that I don't get to post again. This hassle really isn't worth my membership fee, and I hope that nobody else has to go through this kind of mistrust, humiliation, and wrongful accusation for the use of two small words given in the good spirit of each challenge.

It's kind of ironic then that most people seem to find your comments helpful, as per your profile page:

Instead of being so angry and adamant about your right to copy and paste comments, why not just consider leaving comments specific to each image? You might find that you learn something from it and people are more apt to value your comments if they feel you looked at their image rather than copy and pasted the same comment to every image in the challenge, regardless of quality. Just a suggestion.

Thank you Nuzzer. I've pointed this out to them as well, but it makes no difference.

And to MK, yes I have no problem with that. But you must have missed the part where I said that I go back in and leave more detailed comments, as much as I am able, but the way that I was figuring it, at the very least, I said something to everyone. I only could wish for that kind of thing. Oh, and about me being 'angry', I never stated that I was angry, I'm not angry at all. I'm humiliated and feel very mistreated. Angry, no. Definately not. This photography thing is a very small part of my life, and this hassle just isn't worth it. That emotion is not anger, and is an incorrect assumption on your part. I am dismayed more than anything.

And I would think that NONE of you like to be questioned why you say what you say when you comment, and I don't think that you like to be questioned why you vote the way that you do. Please extend the same courtesy to me.

Thanks for the opinions. BTW - I meant in no way to discredit a staged shot. I don't think it any less of a skilled shot than a live capture, espescilly since I've been experimenting with new forms of projection=0)

And I wouldn't vote a shot I thought to be staged any lower, as long as it were a good shot. I was only curious about the criteria, so I would know how to prepare future shots.

Are staged shots (I.E.- using a screen or projected background, etc) allowed, or does it have to be a live capture? I desperaely fear being DQ'ed, and would like some insight as to what the general consensus is on what would be out of line for staging a shot.

NO, it has nothing to do with trying to jack up any helpful comments. What would be the point? Scroll up and read the previous comments in this thread.

And in regard to ME removing my comment, that is not what happened. The folks here at DPC have seemed to find that necessary.

msgoodygal, thanks for your encouragement. I now realise it was genuine, at the time, when everyone was getting them, it seemed like a form letter comment sort of thing. Perhaps you might mention something you particularly like about the photo after saying great job

I have tried to go back in, as I have previously stated, and leave a more detailed comment. In fact, the admin that I've been receiving communication from states that the comments that I left that were more detailed, that she thought that maybe I should apply to be a member of the critique club.

Go figure. Damned if I do, damned if I don't. They need to fix their FAQs so that they don't encourage anyone to leave comments for everybody, or they will end up being accused of altering the stats. Their FAQs state that they encourage us to leave comments. When I did, this is what I get.
