preach it, sis'ta...

of course, depending on who you go play with and how poorly you shoot, you might not hear the end of that for awhile either...

See, now there's the beauty of it - all my regular golf partners have moved to distant lands (like Alabama and Virginia, of all places) so I just walk on as a single and play with complete strangers. No one to hassle me later! I do tend to have to listen to "Do you always have to hit it straight down the middle?" a lot when I play with strangers.

Haven't turned scores back on, but haven't received any comments, so I'm guessing there hasn't been a miraculous newfound understanding regarding the sheer impressiveness of my photo. Golf next Saturday it is!

I know that is all to much to ask. Went from 6.7 to 5.8 over night. :-(

LOL! don't feel bad, I went from 7+ to 5.6 over night!
I think that is the biggest drop I have ever seen in my 72 challenges.

alabama has some wonderful golf courses... you should go visit your friends...

back in 2000, i was working 4 day weeks and going every friday to the course as a walk-on... the course i played didn't allow alcohol, so i didn't have to wonder if the people i ended a round with would be the same ones i started with, if you get my meaning.. ;)

of course, that all ended when the knees went bad... now that the knees are fixed, i'm back at a 5 day a week job... doh!

you never know what you have until it's gone...

much like my dreams of a ribbon...

I'd say it's a good thing. Better than getting "Crappy Job" from the "Crappy Job Baggie"!

LoL. I shouldn't read while drinking soda. I almost did a spittake on the keyboard. lol maybe I'll become the "crappy job baggie" just to add some balance and make sure the "great job baggie" isn't inflating everyones egos. I don't think I'll get marked helpful quite as often as she does though. ;)

An open letter to the members here from the 'Great Job Baggie'....

First of all, I want to say thanks to those of you who have been very helpful to me, even when you may not have known that you have helped me. Quite a few of you have left comments for my entries, and I've learned a great deal from just the little remarks that you leave.

But let me just say that I'm a bit discouraged at the way some people in here have taken offense to my 'great job' comment. I did not give myself the nick 'Great Job Baggie'. I referred to that in this recent challenge because I read the forums, and that is what you were referring to me as. And not only as the 'Great Job Baggie', but many other things to, such as 'Troll' and 'Angry'. I'm none of those things.

If I vote early in the challenge, it is because I'm excited to see what is there, and I sit and wait for that clock to change because I want to see the beautiful shots out there. And if I vote late at night, it's because I've worked a night shift for so long, that I am AWAKE when the rest of the world sleeps. None of these things make me a 'Troll' or 'Angry'.

Now, with that being said, let me also say that I've never left comments for the sake of any statistics, or being marked as 'helpful' or anything of the kind. I didn't even know those kinds of stats existed until today, nor do I still know what weight those stats bear on anything here.

I leave that comment because I vote early on my first impression, and want to make sure that I say something positive to everyone who enters, in an effort to let them know that I appreciate their entry, and their entry, no matter the final score, is indeed a 'great job'. I go back in before the close of the voting, and adjust my votes, and leave more detailed comments as time permits. If I don't get back to someone with a more detailed comment, at least I've said SOMETHING positive in regard to their entry. That is what prompts me to leave 'Great Job'.

I'm sorry that so many of you have taken offense to that, and if it has truly bothered any of you, I apologize. Please know that my intent in leaving that comment was always with a pure and thankful heart.

It seems some of you have been SO bothered by that comment, that you have felt it necessary to report me to DPC authorities. I bear no ill-will towards any of you for doing it, however in all my life have I never seen such a negative response for something so harmless.

I have explained to DPC that I don't feel that I should have to change the way that I vote, and I wouldn't change a thing about it. Now it appears that my membership here is in jeopardy. But I will stand by my 'great job' comment, because I know where my heart stands each and every time that I leave that comment for you - even IF it is cut and pasted.

And if they decide that I should no longer be a member here, I hope that those of you who complained rather than emailed me for an explanation feel some sense of satisfaction, and are at peace with yourselves, because I know that I am at peace with myself.

And regardless of your role in what is taking place, I wish you all nothing but good luck in the future challenges, and with your personal or professional photography endeavours.

And for those of you who have taught me through your comments (and believe me, it's been but a handful of people who have left comments for me overall), I say 'thanks'.

Good luck all.

I take no offence from your comments.

perhaps if you weren't a 'baggie' the response may not have been so extreme? The anonimity seems to imply there is something to hide.
08/07/2006 06:10:42 PM · #62
I for one really never even concidered that you really meant "great job" I figured you were just saying soemthing for the heck of it due to the sheer magnitude of photos you left it on. and sometimes to wake up to a 4.9 or something and have the only coment you have say nothing more than "great job" kinda of hurts. It's almost a weird slap in the face. it's like "great job"? well your the only one who thinks so. and then people think of you as not being genuine and wonder if you even looked at the photo. stupid I know. but i'm just trying to explain. I never cared enough to complain to anyone. it doesnt really effect me much but I figured you were going for some sort of record or something. I do hope you get to stay it's not like telling people they did a god job is harming anyone to any large degree. sorry you even have to wonder about your membership staus. thats just assinine. my apologies for ever making fun of the "Great job" baggie comments. I sincerely did not think you took them seriously or would mind. I'm Sorry.

Good Lord! If anything, it felt like receiving an autograph from a celebrity ;) I'd like to take this opportunity to thank you Linda, for taking the time to comment on my work. Much appreciated :)

I accept your apology and hold no ill will as I did 20 minutes ago. See my major case is if someone wants to leave a comment on one of my images I appreciate it and know most of the time they mean well. When they hide their name while voting? That's what sends me off. Had you revealed your name with that comment I would have contacted you and asked for a clarification, or I may have waited until the challenge was over and then asked.

Personally I never hide my name, if someone wants to blast me for a comment so be it, I can stand behind what I wrote and maybe even change it after they explain what I missed in my comment. That's all. No biggie.

Photographer in an exhibit, standing next to his photo.

A stranger walks up.

"Wow, great job".

Photographer turns red. "That's all you can say?? Great job?? You pathetic ass, and you don't even tell me your name before insulting me with 'great job'. I'm reporting you to management!"

Ahh yeah, it all makes sense now.

I wasn't going to post any more back and forth after I left that message, but you pointed out something that I did not clarify, so I will take this opportunity to clear up the 'hidden' thing for you and anyone else who may be interested.

When I first came to this site, (I've only been here a couple of months), I did not have my nick hidden. I received several emails during the voting. It's not that I don't like getting emails from people, none were unfriendly by any means. It is just that it goes against what I should feel is an anonymous process, just like the photos themselves are held anonymous. I did not reallize that it wouldn't be until after I started getting emails. I felt that when someone emails me about my comment, I see their name, and if I remember which photo I left a particular comment for, then my vote could be swayed. I then decided to remain hidden until afterward.

Several people on here have emailed me afterward, and again, almost all have been cordial and I have no problem responding as well. I think those of you out there who have communicated with me know that I'm not a malicious person.

It really hurts me to think that what I have done is being seen as malicious in some way. People complain when they don't get comments, and I guess they complain when they do. Such is life, human nature I suppose. Funny thing is, some of these people who complain in the forums about my comment, have NEVER left ONE comment for me, in ANY of the challenges that I've entered.

I have only tried to make people happy and leave a comment. With 300 entries on average per challenge, it's an awful lot of work for me to go in and leave a very detailed comment, as you can imagine. So yes, I have cut and pasted a standard comment, and then try to go back in and leave more details for many of you later on. I thought it was somewhere around 70% that I got back to for more details, but the admin here has graciously found the time to tally up all of my comments and indicated that I don't get back to that many to leave further comments.

But I don't think that should matter. Isn't a 'Great Job' comment better than no comment at all. I have made an extreme effort to be a positive part of this site, and an extreme effort in trying to let everyone know that their entry alone, no matter the quality or beauty, is a 'great job'.

I agree with you 100% and appreciate your comment. I feel sorry for those wishing to read malice in your efforts to spread goodwill.

I for one hope you don't stop.

First off, let me say nobody should be booted from DPC for leaving comments like that, which are not derogatory.

However that said, I don't find the comment "great job" all that helpful especially when you give it to everybody in the challenge regardless of how great a job they actually did. To me handing out those comments willy nilly like that is no different than just leaving "asdf" as a comment. Just my opinion though. Maybe you'll find it great. :P

The only time they don't is if they get a comment they like. Really what you have to do is give a comment that "reads the mind" of the photographer and tells them exactly how "they feel" about the picture in thier own mind. Then they will be happy.
