I have the doubt about chess is a game or a sport.

Some one could help me in this.

Thanks

Clearly not a sport. Does it matter enough for a "doesn't meet the challenge"? I haven't decided yet...

Sport for the brain!

One thing about Chess is if I play more than 3 games at night,I can't sleep !???

There are some interesting sites online about chess being (or not being) a sport.

The Faculty Advisor of the UMBC Chess Club says chess is a sport.

The Official UK Chess as a Sport Campaign, 2002

Plus innumerable forum discussions on the topic.

There are some beautiful shots,17 tens and 21 nines for now!

Chess is a sport to whomever took the chess shots, so let 'em have it. Don't force them to think the way you do - try thinking the way they did when they took the shot. And pray they do the same thing when voting on yours.

I make this question because i sow a lot of chess shots in the sport challenge and I dont wanna give them a low score.
09/15/2003 02:13:29 AM · #8
Then don't give 'em a low score. These people feel that, to them, chess is a sport. So, meets the challenge. If you like the shot, score it high. Chess meets the challenge.

if you can smoke and drink while doing it, it's not a sport.. :o)

LOL! That criteria's going to knock out a lot of the shots in this challenge.

A sport is competative & physical. If chess is a sport then so must be internet browsing.

we dont compete in internet browsing.
we dont have a world champion in internet browsins.

Chess sure is a sport

Chess is a sport.

Another thing to consider: the details for the "Sports" challenge specifically say to capture the action. I will be taking into account whether or not a shot is conveying "action" when I vote, since that was clearly a requirement for this challenge, regardless of the definition of "sport".

The "action" of Chess is thinking and moving the pieces. I saw at least one pic that did capture that.

Sometimes the action is stillness though

Does that really make sense? The first definition of action at dictionary.com is the state or process of acting or doing -- not "sitting still".

I've never shot sports before, but I approached this challenge as if I were a newspaper or magazine photographer and was given a "Sports" assignment. I made the effort to go places where I would be able to take shots similar to those that you would find in the "Sports" section of a newspaper or in a magazine that covered sporting events, such as Sports Illustrated or ESPN Magazine... and IMHO, I believe that was the spirit of this challenge.

It is unfortunate that there isn't some way to have "photographer's effort" factored in to the scores... :-)

Action can mean inaction

here's an example from 3rd grade english

Joanna is sitting at her computer

Subject = Joanna

Nown/ action word = sitting

Apparently the challenge voters don't care if you meet the challenge or not. The spider photos would not have done as well. So I will send a cat photo in, a real sporting cat, a puma eating a deer that was shot by a hunter. Chess is a board game, but I will not give any ones to chess shots this week, 2s or 3s maybe. I can't give above a 4 to anyshot that doesn't meet the challenge. I have values. Van

People can dress it up any way they want..... chess is a game, not a sport.... I have sat out a number of challenges lately because I have not had a shot that fits the challenge, people with chess shots should have done the same....

You're thinking of verbs there, Joanna. Right idea though.

There are many official "Chess as a sport" campaigns in the UK and elsewhere. Thus, chess is not a sport (at least not yet) and that's official.

It cannot be included in the 2004 olympics as it is not a sport that is sen by the sports ministers and ruling bodys.

It also lacks and physical effort or skill and that in it self means it is no sport.

I have been easy on the chess images though, it's not like it's way off the criteria.

Is that the Olympic Games or the Olympic Sports :P

Hey, I can be pedantic too! <cheesy grin>

To include Chess in Olympics is just a matter of politics.
In recent years, Olympics have included sports which do not have the tradition or depth of chess just because they could be easily included and controlled by the Olympics organization.

There is a huge misconception about the lack of physical effort.

Whoever states:

makes it pretty evident that they do not have any idea of what competitive chess is and I mean: NO IDEA.

It is ridicolous to make a judgement about one thing that you just do not know.

The question of whether or not chess is a sport only has relevance here in connection with whether it meets the challenge or not.

Let's move the discussion onto the other part of the challenge - showing the action in a sport. Not all of the entries actually do this. If we're going to be pedantic about one part of the challenge, at least keep the game fair and be pedantic about the other.
