I have one Canon 430EX flash. I was wondering if there is anyway I can get my flash to fire when it is off the camera. I want it to be triggered when I press the shutter button on my camera. I was looking through the manual and it kept saying how I have to slave it to a master flash. Since I only have one flash, this is not possible. Any help would be appreciated.
Thank!

Ding ding! You got it. You need another flash for one to be the slave. |

The first question is, how far off-camera do you need it to be? There is a hot-shoe cord you can purchase that will give you a couple feet, enough to hand-hold or mount on a bracket.
For true remote operation, you need to trigger it with an on-camera flash. I don't know if the 430EX can be triggered by the 20D's pop-up flash, but suspect it cannot be. I believe the triggering with the Canon units is by infrared.
Edited: I originally though it might be possible to trigger with the on-board flash, but upon further reflection, I think the triggering is infrared, which would seem to rule it out.
Don't listen to my ramblings, I'm obviously addled.

I can fire my Sigma with the pop-up flash on my camera. I'd think you should be able to do the same with the Canon flash. It's in my manual as "normal slave flash"

That's what I thought too, but I just can't seem to figure out how.
MK, are you sure it's not possible? |

If you get another flash it will have to be the 550 or the 580. The 430 can not be the master.
you can get this little gem though
//www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelDetailAct&fcategoryid=141&modelid=8304
I got mine for about $200 from B&H. It is my favorite accessory in my bag.

i agree here - it is one of my favorite accessories.
comes in handier than you might think. though i am not sure if you need a 550/580ex for it to work.

You're right, you do not need another flash for this to work with the 430.
I meant without something like this, you need a 550 or 580. having 2 430s will not work since the 430 can not be set to master.
