(sorry for the long post, in advance)

Last Friday, Byron (my fiancé) felt ill around lunchtime. He was having some difficulty breathing, his chest felt tight, and he was light-headed and kind of clammy. He has a history of panic attacks, so we both figured it was another one and thought we'd wait it out. After about 10 minutes, it was worse instead of better, so he decided to have me drive him to the ER to have his heart checked out in case it was a heart attack or something horrible like that. We go, and luckily, there was nobody else in the waiting room (miracle) and they took him right in. They commenced hooking him up to every bell and whistle in the neighborhood, testing this, that, and the other thing just to be safe. Bloodwork was fine (high cholesterol, but nothing overly serious), 02 sats were a little low at first but quickly improved when he was given oxygen, chest X-Ray was fine, EKG was fine, but his blood pressure was sky high (191/113) so they gave him some nitro-glycerin and it brought it down within about 10 minutes to a more manageable level. They gave him something to calm him a bit, and he was breathing better. He had back surgery a couple of weeks ago, so the doctor thought that maybe since he was post-op he might have a pulmonary embolism...so he decided to run a CT scan, just to rule it out.

We waited...and waited...and waited...then finally, the doc came back in with the CT scan results. There was no clot anywhere...but...there was a nodule in the upper lobe of his left lung, as well as significant swelling in his lymph nodes in his chest. It took us by surprise and we are still kind of reeling from just the thought that there is something growing in there that doesn't belong there. The dreaded "c" word came up, but then again, it could be nothing. The radiology report actually said "...findings are worrisome for primary pulmonary malignancy." I have to keep telling myself that he's only 39, and has never smoked a day in his life. That has to be in his favor.

He goes for a biopsy on August 10 (the soonest they could get him scheduled) and we will know definitively what we're dealing with within a few days after that. I'm really scared, but hopeful that it will be something benign and not something completely life-altering.

I really could use a little good karma down here in Texas...if you would, please send a positive vibe for him and let's all hope together for good news.

I just got him back...I really am not ready to let him go again.

Here's some positive vibes coming your way Laurie.

Years ago my wife went through the exact same thing, and we all were desperately afraid it was cancer, but in the end it was just swollen nymph nodes and a diagnosis of (of all things) "cat scratch fever". I never did understand how the lung shadow fit into that.

Bear hug for you.

Sorry to hear about this, Laurie. I will send lots of positive energy and good vibes your way.

With Byron's age and since he has never smoked I doubt you need to worry about the C word; especially if he hasn't exhibited any of the symptoms like coughing.

Laurie, I'll be sending my thoughts your way and keeping you both in my prayers. This, too, shall pass. Oft times we get a chance to get scared so that we remember how precious life and people we love are to us. I'm feeling that things will be good for the two of you.

Laurie,

In east Texas with all the pines, it also could be sarcoidosis. I have several patients with that disease in Houston.

I had "cat scratch fever" when I was a kid. Robert you are the only other person I've ever heard mention it in 30 years. Most people think you are joking when you say you've had it and start singing the song.

My thoughts and prayers go out to you. My mother was just diagnosed with cervical cancer last week. It took a month for those test results. We are still waiting for further test results to see how bad it is. That could take another couple of weeks. So, I know what you are going through.
