Ok, I got one of these silly internet PPS shows that goes around that's claiming that on August 27, 2006, Mars will be very close to the Earth and that it will be very visible. I laughed at the statement towards the end that it would appear the size of the moon to the naked eye at 34 million miles.

Personally, I think that it was loaded with hogwash, bullspit, hooey, bologna and a variety of other spurious substances, but I was wondering what the real story is.

I will probably be on a mountain in a small town in a part of Taiwan with relatively low smog, and I was wondering if it might be worthwhile to actually grab the tripod and 2X TC and make the best of it to see what I can get.

Or will it be the difference between a . and a .

Thanks.

The snopes article is detailed and informative.

It also points out that the 'as large as the full moon' thing is referring to comparing the view through a 75 power telescope.

Thanks larry!

Davy, don't forget that you can often stick a P&S cam right up to the eyepeice and get some pretty decent results.

1) Good reference to the snopes article. Keeps the hogwash under control!

2) PnS cameras on a telescope: Absolutely! Here's one I did a while back with an Olympus D-100, handheld over the ocular:

Yeah that email is old and was true a couple years ago, think it will be close in another two years but not as close as it was in 2003.
here is a site from nasa that you can enter dates and recive distances from earth to mars on that date.
