Hello, I usually just lurk the contests, but here I am with some photos for all y'all to dissect.

I recently completed my music website at Bill Hartzell.com, and I'm proud to say I created all of my own photos for the site.

Some of the reaction on the music forums I frequent was that I had hired a professional for some photos :-) Another user commented on the lighting scheme for this self portrait:

I'll tell you how I set up the shot later, but your comments are appreciated.

well...if you really want it:

1. your eyes are out of focus due to the motion blur from the slow shutter speed you had to use with the poor lighting, plus the fact that you probably focused on your face instead of your eyes.

2. the background should be slightly out of focus, especially since it is so busy.

3. The lighting is two different types, and the temperature difference between the two throws the shot off (i originally was thinking you were sitting in front of a computer and it was throwing the monitor light on your face)

4. The picture lacks contrast and needs some color. It looks 70'sish with that tungsten lighting that wasn't correctly white balanced.

thats about it...I don't mean to be so harsh I just want you to know what you can improve on next time.

You originally would be correct! See how my neck is blue?

The low light/color casting is sort of a (forced) theme, since I don't have real lighting gear. Ideally, my face would have proper lighting and clarity to contrast with the dim background.

Studio musicians tend to have that pallid skin tone, though. ;-)

Not harsh at all, you should see what goes down on music boards!
