The New York Institute of Photography.

It was suggested to me by one of the members. I am seriously considering to enroll to this on-line institute, but before I do that, is there anyone that actually joined to that institute? ...and how was it?

If I don't get any answer, I will just join anyway.

No time to go to actually classes, on-line is the best for me to get some sort if certification to become a "photographer-on-paper"

When I was married, I sent my ex-wife through thier courses. I was able to look through all the materials they sent. It, IMO, is a very comprehensive course and you are free to work at your own pace.

I too am considering this course. It has so far seemed the best course for me to go through as well.

Yeah, I've done the course! It was back in the late 90's. IMO well worth the investment as it is hands on, genuine feedback given (on audio tapes back then) and the assignments are/were challenging but not impossible - just needed to "step outside the square". The material is first class (still have my manuals etc) and it covers ALL aspects of photography. Let them know of your experience level and they'll probably judge your photos accordingly. My course was conducted by the Australian arm of the NYI of P and done via postal (on-line was not available back then).

I also am enrolled in NYIP. It is very informative. I really feel as though it is worth my money. I do everything by mail, and in my own time. The courses are challenging, but realisic. My only complaint is that it is very dated.(70's ish) But once again it is worth the money.

Id suggest taking a course or 2 at your local college. It will be cheaper possibly, and you have the instructor right there for your questions and they can physically show you how something is done, instead of explaining it or emailing it.

Unfortunately I really don't have any time to go out for classes :( I know I probably should make more time, but there are no more time between work, gym, my son... and shooting photos :P

Price is right too. Even it's an old school institute. I would have one complaint, I don't have a cassette tape player :D I am sure CDs are available by now :D

I probably will start on first week of August.

Nope, everything is still cassette, and some DVD's, its mixed.

You can get a cheap personal casstette player at wal-mart and target for $10.

I just got the packet for NYIP today. It all looks good, and I haven't found a negative comment yet on the Internet anywhere. I, am currently deciding how I should pay, full or installments.

If someone wants to try to talk me out of it, try to do it before the 29th. That's when my $150 off certificate expires.

Ok, those who think cassette tapes are kind of old for learning material; I think NYI changed all to CDs now. I got my new units (again) with instructions of changes and CDs (no tapes). So, thank you NYI of Photography :)

Remind you that NYI gives a pass card for student to go take pictures in some of the photographer's area designated... There are other cool stuffs, but most important is the learning you will do. Basics to complex...

...and I don't get checks from them to say all that, I am just a happy student ;)

Hey there! Just wanted to add here that I finally got a chance (and the money) to sign up today! I'm pretty excited!

I was really torn between going here or trying to find local classes, but I realized the community college is $47 a credit ($150 - $200 per class) and you can't take classes at the U unless you get into their photography program, and their tuition is crazy ($1200 per class, about). So the $650 I'm paying for the NYI is a real bargin in comparison, plus I get three years to complete everything.

I did it and it truly is a great course. Although it does need to be updated a bit and cd's instead of cassettes would be great. I should bill them for the cassette player I had to go out and buy.

I enrolled in this course after the first of the year. I am still waiting for my unit one to arrive. However, in the literature they have already sent me, the indicated that I will be receiving CD's. So, they may have updated the course to CD's already. I am looking forward to beginning once I get the material.

The materials I had received also indicated I'd be getting CDs/DVDs. If they were still doing VHS, I wouldn't be able to watch! Luckily, I DO have a tape player - for the feedback, they specified 'audio' instead of CDs, so who knows.

I don't mind you contacting me at all, but I am not sure how far ahead of you I will be. I haven't received the units yet, and am afraid if they ship by anythign other than Priority mail for the units that I won't see it for a while. Parcel Post takes a long time for mail to reach me.

Well, I JUST signed up tonight, so if I get mine first, I'll be shocked! Even so, I'll be going at 'my own pace' so it'll likely be slow going. It's nice to know that someone else will be working on the same stuff, though!

I will be signing up for classes too once we get moved and settled back in. I sent off for info a month or so ago. Iwas going to take a local photog course at the University here, but I already have degrees, and I would have had to take some redundant classes...etc.. so it wasnt worth paying the few thousand dollars per semester for it.

I have heard good things about NYIP, so we shall see!

Maybe we should start our own little thread titled NYIP students for help and moral support!! :)

I have been really struggling on the decision to take the Photography Course or the Digital Photography course. I feel like the first 3 or 4 units in the photography course might be a little elementary, but at the same time the digital course seems like it is mostly about photoshop. Anyone have any experience with either? Which curriculum are you enrolled in?

That's a good idea, gwe21! A moral support thread would be fantastic - at least it would be for me.

I decided to go with the professional photography course because the digital sounded like it was mostly going to be about photoshop to me, too - and I don't even HAVE photoshop! Haha! Besides, I figure a review of the basics wouldn't hurt - everything I've learned I've learned on my own or through here, so who knows what I got wrong (error on the learning, not on the DPC)!

BTW, once you get your student ID, you can get Photoshop, Lightroom and other software at a discounted student price.

I'm mostly self taught ... with a photojournalism background mostly, so I myself signed up for NYIP just to see if I was missing anything. It does slow me down a bit when I think about submitting photos to my adviser. I'm more selective of what I show her.

I've enjoyed it so far. I'm kinda excited to be doing it... and hey, it can't hurt on my resume. Ultimately, if I had the money/time I'd go to the Hallmark School of Photography, but it's considerably more expensive than NYI and requires one to go to school.
