Please can everybody put their thinking caps on. These challenge numbers are getting way to big. We were fretting at 600 images in a challenge...look at the two challenges that are about to go into voting...!

Surely there is an answer to this problem.

And in case some of you ask...what is the problem. Well how many votes and/or comments due to think you are going to get with these numbers?

I was thinking the same thing today Judi looking at those two numbers. I debated whether or not to enter and decided it's just so overwhelming as it is. Not that I have any solutions though :(

Eh... just pick one to vote on?

Shorten the submit/vote times and add more challenges.

Add one or two more open challenges since you can't submit to more than one.

Yep...sounds good. I suggested that a while ago but nothing happened...hopefully something will soon.

The obvious solution will be to create a third simultaneous challenge in the future. (for non-members)

We could also make more member limitations, perhaps, you can only enter into one challenge every other week if you are a non-member.

If we did that however, we would have to be careful not to allow a slippery slope of member restrictions to be created. This would detract from the coolness of DPC a large amount, and I say this as a current non-member.

Kinda' makes me wanna' pull my lines entry.
But then again, a top 20 in a huge challenge is oh so sweet, which I will be doing by the way. hehehehe

honestly, I don't really enter challenges anymore because it is just overwhelming. And I don't get good comments anyomore. I don't really learn anything from them, because people have SO MANY photos to comment on.

I'm fully expecting a nice 5.2 with 2 comments. :-)

And Brad? Gross! (But strangely funny.)

Perhaps the fact that school is out for the summer (in the United States, at least) is giving a certain demographic of photographer more free time? We could possibly see the entry numbers drop a bit in September when school starts up again? Maybe?

I really don't think you can take anything away from folks without disgruntling and losing quite a few. I've seen it at other sites, where they offer lots free, then after a while decrease the free and say you have to join if you want the benefits. I've also seen those sites fail as they drive people away, feeling unwanted.

But another basic challenge or two might be the only way to go, I dunno.

A third open challenge, perhaps, and shoot for all three then enter the least populated. :-)

Or have the two member challenges a week - one Sunday, one Thursday - and leave the two open challenges on Tuesday for non-members only?
07/18/2006 11:36:28 PM · #17
Yes I agreee....it should be 4 non member challenges a week with only 2 days to shoot and 2 days to vote....it would eliminate a lot of entries for the sake of entering.

I dont even vote that much anymore, because I prefer to vote 100% if I'm going to do it.

The problem with 2 days to shoot, 2 days to vote is those of us with pesky day jobs who do a great deal (if not all) of our shooting on weekends and vote over a period of several evenings after work.

Crayon, I also vote 100%. It gets down to the wire some weeks!

Two days is also a bit short. I think three is a good number, it errs on the safe side while giving the same benefits. If we did this, the only problem left would be coming up with that many challenges.

And quite a few entries for lack of time :( We rank amateurs need time for trial and error; stuff doesn't come naturally to us yet! Though some shortening of each might be bearable... just not THAT short, please?

Now as you can see I am helping solve the problem by not submitting much. only 8 submissions this year :)

yeah, some of us would never have daylight to shoot if we do it after work hours... that puts many at a disadvantage.

3 days shoot/2 days vote would end up with at least 1 weekend shooting day for at least one challenge each week if I've done the math right in my addled brain.
