Judy was very careful in phrasing her request, and ,directly, no, she didn't request from us to go and vote for *her* picture.

However, as a mental excercise, suppose a good friend asks you to go and help him by voting for his picture in some contest (not this particular contest, but any other). Given the context of helping your friend, if his picture turns out to be worse than those of the others', voting for somebody else's picture would be quite the opposite of helping him out. So, no matter how carefully the request is worded, the *actual* message seems quite clear, and I'm surprised that I need to explain it.

Now, the next question is: why is it wrong to help somebody by voting for them in a photography contest? There are many answers for that. And "the others are doing it" is not a valid reason for an unethical behaviour.

Regardless of how this particular contest is set up (and its set-up is, obviously, geared solely towards bringing new online viewers to their front page - definitely not to advancement of photography), winning in a photography contest implies that the winning photograph was perceived to be better than the others by some fair, unbiased jury (which can be a selected few, or the entire Internet). By bringing yor friends to vote for you, you are getting rid of the unfair and unbiased bit, and, even if your friends are all unbiased virture itself, skews demographics of the resource, which is also detrimental to the fair outcome.

I think judy should start another thread with specifically mention 'please vote for me' in subject line.

this thread starts as 'made top ten...', lot of people have not read this thread at all, voting is different thing.

just put a thread asking to vote specifically, the number of votes should shoot up.

None of his recent dpreview posts are soliciting votes so perhaps he's doing it privately. Hopefully the prize money will be a big enough sum to erase the memory of statements like "and I must admit, his photo is a tad better - nevertheless I voted for yours." :)

I don't think there is any need for memory to be erased.

My statements are based on the most unbiased opinion on the photographs that I could manage. Cropping is a HUGE part of the picture. His shot is of the fireworks and the monument, but he left in a bunch of distracting elements down below... If he had cropped in a bit, he would have a better picture and I would have voted for his pic instead.

Nothing against either of them, just about the picture.

I hope that neither would be offended by something like that.

So why is Photo 8 not getting votes? Is almost the same shot as Judy's and Bob's shot?

For me, the crop is not very good on that shot; The statue is harder to see; the flare of whatever it to the left of the firework burst is distracting; detail seems soft - even softer than mine. I think that the red firework alone doesn't do as much to set off the monument and the statue. The crop makes the biggest difference to me...it just doesn't appear very artistically done or impactful. Of course, I might be biased :) The 3 I like best are mine, Bob's and the one belonging to the guy named Sean. I don't remember their numbers.

Sunday afternoon bump. I'm currently in third place.

Here's the link again:

Voting Link

The contest is the Monument photo contest, I believe it's now on the right hand side of the front page.

Sorry Judy, voted the image without looking at the names and it wasn't yours. Seems to always be the way it is though -- the one I like best seems to never make it to the top 3.

Need to get the SC to change the title from '...need your help!' to '...need your vote!'

That is quite alright! :) Which one did you like? I had entered 4 different shots, and I don't think they picked my best one, but that's how these things go. Personally I think either of these other two would have been stronger competitors:

Currently in third...would have liked second, but first is definitely out of reach. I saw his (Bob..the guy in first) photo in print out at the fair tonight and it looks great. He has earned the first prize.

Tomorrow's the last day to vote. This is my last bump. Thanks to all who have shown your support!
