Hello all, new to the board and have recently decided to take the dive into the digital photography world. This looks like a great site to learn the ropes. I have done a little research, and am a little overwhelmed with all the options out there. I am throwing out the question to see what you guys who have already been through all this think. I'm pretty open to any ideas, and basically looking for the most camera I can get for my small budget. I mostly enjoy taking landscape and wildlife photos... but It appears the larger zoom models I would like to shoot wildlife with are a little out of my price range. So far I'm considering a Coolpix 880, and have thought about holding off a while and saving up for a Olympus 740, or used Olympus 2100UZ. Any better Ideas? Sources for quality used cameras?

You can get a new Olympus C-4000 for about $300. Its 4MPx, capable of full manual control and has decent macro. It doesn't have the big zoom. You could check out Fuji 3800 for the big zoom, but you're back to 3MPx and also no capabilities of going full manual. I'd say save up and try to get something in the 500-600 range. If you HAVE to get one, I'd go for the C-4000. the 2100UZ has some nice features, but they are at least a couple years old and only 2MPx. I don't think its a good buy unless you can pick one up for really really cheap.

If you are looking for a point and shoot, there are a ton for less than $300. Just remember, you get what you pay for. For me, there is no replacement for manual control of my camera.

yeah, the canon should have manual controls on it..... this is a great option, because there is a limited amount you can learn from a point and shoot... plus the canons (I think) are straight forward.

The olympus 740 is very nice... especially with the 10x zoom. Apparently is a good quality-- optically.
If the coolpix 880 is what I think it is-- the old discontinued one, skip right over it. In the end you'll just end up replacing it with the camera you really wanted. The older coolpix (with most old digitals) had very slow response times. You needed ESP to know when the shot would be ready, and you'll need new batteries every 10 minutes

good luck!

Manual controls are exactly why I chose this camera. I was on the same budget as you. Plus it was the easiest way for me to switch to digital, having previously used a Canon SLR [same modes].
