It is a happy day and a sad day in the Toole household. The blue ribbon is sweet but we were really hoping to see both of our pics on front page. After looking at the vote tallies it showed that Aimees pic had 23 votes 3 and under and 33 at 4. Did it seem too out of the box? Did it get slammed for not obviously being paper? Did this scream DNMC or just not say "stationery" in the traditioinal sense to keep the DNMC'ers away? ANy comments would be appreciated.

It gotta 6.2... Do we have to go through this every challenge? 56 people didn't like it but it got a 6.2...

I gave it an 8 and thought it was very creative.

I have to agree with this statement. People just get over it! You cant please everyone, everyone isnt going to love your idea. And you scored very well. Just be happy you scored well and dont worry why people did what they did. You will never know. And if they do tell you it wont make sense to you anyway. So just let it go!!!!!!!!!!!

artoole,

your shot's got 37 comments during, and 40 total. Most are praises, but some offer you an idea of why it scored low. (DNMC, didn't look like stationEry etc.)
This is a lot of comments for any challenge, and if you extrapolate it, you've got a proportional number of comments from all voters - those that voted you high and those that voted you low.

I haven't voted on it, but my comment would be that it is a good shot - above average for that matter, but not a wow-factor ribbon winner. I think that it got what it deserves (as is usually true with all other underrated DPC shots I've seen).

Keep them coming!

hmph. wow. that's all il have to say.

This highlights a common issue - it is not enough merely to actually comply with the terms of the challenge, but you have to give the impression of having complied with the terms of the challenge. Put another way, you need to be seen to have complied.

This is a great image, but obviously some people did not consider the shot to evoke the theme of stationery. You have used stationery in your entry, but (for some) the qualities that your image evokes are not those traditionally associated with stationery.

In fact - being seen to have complied with the challenge is more important than actually complying with it - if you had taken a great photo of, say, a sculpture that looked like stationery but was not, then you would probably not get any DNMCs as people would not be aware of your complicity!

FWIW, I like the image!

I gave this a 4. Not totally a DNMC because it did look like paper, but it doesn't look like something you would write on. No feel of stationery. I have now looked at the image 3 times (once during voting and twice this morning.) To me, it is just two objects against a black background. The sun has a bit of drama in colors and lighting, but there is no emotion in the overall shot. Hope this at least explains one of the lower scores, and I am in the minority so I'm not sure how useful it will be.

i found it a confusing image - it did not scream stationery to me
i could see it was partialy made with paper but ..

(& btw i had 21 votes 3 & less .. & i'm not worried about it .. just be glad it came in where it did ..)

"Did this shot deserve 20+ votes 3 and under?"

Yes, because the voters said so. The voters are the audience here and they are the ultimate judge for this venue. Anyone who submits here is looking for the DP Challenge audience reaction and, as such, all reactions are valid.

If you were coming here for a professional photographic opinion then your score may not be indicative of that audiences reaction because this group is not made up entirely of photo judges. A juried show would be more appropriate in that case.

I also agree with the person that said that 40+ comments is a good thing regardless of score. I would take any score if I could evoke 40+ comments everytime I entered :-D

Actually, the real issue here isn't the score, it is the placing. Are you suggesting that some of the other images placing higher were undeserving of their placing??

From the looks of it it will not be long before the both of you achieve your goal. Artoole has won a blue ribbon in only 11 submissions and you have won 2 blue in only 37 tries, not many can say that.

Both of you submit high quality, creative and technically superior images.

Btw, I think one family won all three ribbons in a challenge one time.

I agree with most of what everybody has said here, but with a more understanding ear.

Yes it is odd to see this score 3 or below, and who are these people that do this? I have seen it happen before with 1's, 2's, and 3's on some fabulous photos. Aside from the oddity, such an audience does hold the verdict, and it seemingly holds no biases. Aimee should be proud of this photo, it is very nice, and certainly not a 3. The final outcome bores that result. Let the burden be with the fudgesticks that voted it 3 or below. LOL.

Nice job Aimee.

I belong to a camera club which has quarterly competitions. They have three judges that have photography backgrounds, score on a range of 1-100 and are asked to leave comments. It is not unusual for one shot to have scores of 75, 90, 98, with comments that remind me of some seen here.

My point is that while many here complain about the "uneducated voters", having professional judges does not guarantee concensus, nor does it guarantee your (anybody's) "wonderful, creative, technically superior" shot will get the score you feel it deserves.

I think you put a lot of work into it and it was a good result...I gave it a 7, but to be truthful, it doesn't really impress me as a photograph, but it sure impresses me as a work of art
07/12/2006 09:46:41 AM · #17
Despite all the work put into the set up, it does look like a crepe paper fold out thing that could have been purchased at a party store. My guess is that your low votes are because people thought you were photographing an object you bought and was sort of someone elses work. Like pictures of figurines often get low scores. One I followed a complicated recipe for Ham Loaf and it turned out to be just like Spam.

You can love your photo yourself, but the question is: do the voters love it? And the question after that: why isn't it enough to love your photo yourself? It is enough for me. Ofcourse I hope to see my photo on the frontpage every time. But it never happened. Big deal. I love my photos myself and that's what's important.

Keep trying. That's what I do.

I would love a 6. I think this image deserved a 7 probably.

I feel that sometimes great pictures can score low on this site. Is that worng, I say no. The site is what it is, and if you want to win you need to figure out what this site is looking for. I love the way DPC is set up, and I am one of those consistant low scoring photographers.

Had different opinions? I didn't think so.
You cant expect everyone to agree on everything.

WOW! 13th place would be a celebration day for me!! I have had so many low votes and yet others pick my shots for their favorites. I have had some comments that said something really discouraging about a part of the picture that I personally liked and then other comments that were totally encourageing and about the very same part of the picture. So you figure it out? I think everyone has stated it quite well here. It's just a matter of opinion. If you were going to sell those shots, how many potential customers would actually buy it? How many would look at it and say, nice, but not for me. and if you are blessed, well then someone with the same tastes as you will come along and say, hey, that is the best shot I have ever seen. I love it!!
So relax and enjoy shooting how you feel!! You make lots of people happy either way!! those who like to be overly critical and score low have a blast and those who appreciate a nice shot enjoy your work. So don't worry.
