Attn Site Council: If you don't want me doing this, lock this thread.

Since there seems to be a great desire for mentoring and I suggested someone create a match up list....if the Site Council will allow me...

I'll start that list of mentors and those desiring mentoring. Please bear with me. I have a regular job that keeps me hopping, but if it will help the site, I'll try.

Mentors - please e-mail me (swashbuckler_us@yahoo.com) with your areas of interest, strong points (software and/or hardware), small background and any other information that you feel would be useful for being matched up. (I'd volunteer as a mentor, but I think this will take ALL of my free time)

Those Desiring Mentors - same basic info (but replace strengths with weaknesses)

To all - I'm thinking of posting who's matched up with whom, open mentors and "students" on a weekly basis. What do you think? Good idea or bad?

Volunteers - anybody out there wanting to help with this project would be greatly appreciated.

Is this a good thing?

I think it's a great idea. I'd be willing to help, but like you, don't have a whole lot of 'extra' time. Let me know what you might need help with and I'll see what I can do.

I also like the idea of listing who's matched up with whom and the open list of mentors vs. mentees.

I think it's a fabulous idea. I am currently helping out another dpc user occassionally with some helpful ideas, projects, etc... I think that this is EXACTLY the next step for a lot of us.

I think it is a great idea and I would like to be mentored, but not tortured. LOL

I love the idea and would love to put my name on the student list but don't feel worthy! I do however feel that if there could be some kind of diary or "BLOG" (is that what those online diary things are called?) would be great for the rest of us that are trying to learn. This would help out some that may be to bashful or have other time considerations and don't want to 'bother' the mentors!!!

My $.02 for what it's worth (wait that would be about 2 cents:-P)

O.K. I now have 4 requests for being mentored and ZERO offers to be the mentor. John shouldn't have to carry this burden alone.

From the four requests received, most aren't asking for constant hand holding, just a bit of advice now and then.

Please consider volunteering to be a mentor. Hero status is being offered.

Swash, I don't have a lot of free time, and am not sure what a mentor would do really, but I am willing to take on one person... if they'll have me. I have no formal photography training, and can't get into deep discussions about rules and technical jargon... I just point at cool stuff and click away.

So there you have it... send someone my way. I use AIM. Have them email me at my address in my profile.

Volunteers are coming in! Don't be the last to sign up! Lots of great opportunities to learn, meet and greet, and so much more!

I still need some input as to whether to post matched and unmatched names? Any thoughts? (Please, help!)

O.K. I'm back.
So far, I have 6 mentors signed up. 2 more will be available shortly and I'm putting the "arm" on a few more. For this to work really good, I'd like to have a few more in the mentor pool. If you feel you have anything to offer..please raise your hand.
Conversly, I have 4 potential students and after reviewing John's mentor offer thread, I think I should be tripling that number soon.

We've gotten a good start. Matching up should start soon. If you would like to be on either side of the list, please send me a note.

I'm still wrestling with the idea of status. For the moment, I'm keeping the names close to my vest (protecting the innocent!). I would like some input before I go any further there. I just don't know....

Any thoughts?

Rob, I like your idea and it's something this site could really do with. Good on you and I hope this turns out to be an asset to DPC.

Mentoring Match Up Status
So far, I have recieved e-mail from 8 people offering to be mentors. Of those, two are unavailable at this time, but hopefully will be available in a week or two.

Thank you to you all (you know who you are!)!!! I have also taken up the mentor mantle (trying to set a good example).

16 mentorees (students) have requested mentors. (Notice the math doesn't quite work)

I'm still looking for more mentors. Please don't look at this as "I'm not skilled enough". Mentors are NOT experts in every aspect. Some people have signed up to mentor on Photoshop only. That works! I have students asking for just that kind of help. I've signed up as a mentor and I'm a NO ribbon winner, ever. I think my student is happy enough with me. If not, I'll find that person another mentor. That's how this is going to work. Try it! Don't like it, I'll let you off the hook, honest!

More student types are always welcome, but as you can tell, the waiting list is starting to grow. (I've even gotten one person requesting to be both! Now, I just need to match that person up with both a mentor and a student.)

THANKS TO ALL THOSE TAKING ON THE MENTOR ROLE!!!!

One point that should be made is this: being a good photographer is different than winning ribbons on DPC. There are MANY great photographers on this site who have never won a ribbon; I've profiled a few of them. Winning ribbons on DPC is more of a DPC-Audience Savvy thing, and I suppose that one skill a photographer needs is audience savvy, I suppose.

But for both mentors and mentees: good photography is NOT synonymous with winning ribbons.

I'm happy to be a mentor; and I'd be just as happy to be a mentee! I'm sure that whatever relationship happens, I'll be improving my photography.
