Is it me or are about 90% of the pictures submitted for the "Straight from the Camera" challenge blurry? I've had two glasses of wine on an empty stomache and don't have my reading glasses on, but hey, most of them look out of focus. Maybe I should clean the screen on my monitor?

I've noticed this also - so it tells me that there must be a lot of sharpening going on for other challenges, or just a high percentage of shots that could have been focused 'just a bit' more.

Yes they will be because a perfectly good sharp image reduced to 640x480 goes blurry all by itself.

I'm more interested in all of the portrait ones that have been rotated from their in-camera landscape format. Then there's the mono ones that are coloured ... :)

Yeh, I was wondering about the rotating of the shot. Does that go against the rules? I guess if you were being hard nosed about it you say yes. There were a few that chose not to rotate there pictures. I personally did not vote down because of rotation.

Actually, the rule is no rotating in post processing. Anything done in camera is legal.

And yes, of course, a lot of cameras have those features (b/w effects, colorization, etc.) built in, so in some ways, they have an advantage over some of the other cameras in this challenge.

I know what you mean about the in camera correction for portrait format - got me thinking about mine, and I'm guessing it would have uprighted any portrait shot I did - but I stayed with landscape format. (But I think I learned something new about my camera from this challenge!)

Cheers.

Well it would be tact-sharp if you have set the camera to save as 640x480 and then use in-camera sharpening :)

That's always a good thing. ;o)

Quite a few cameras have in-camera rotation. So, I wouldn't worry about those.

As far as soft-focus goes, I believe the only way around that would be to shoot in VGA resolution.

I just couldn't force myself to dial my camera down, so I side-lined this challenge.

I turned sharpening, contrast and saturation up a notch. First time I actually played with the parameters since I usually shoot RAW.

I'm confused - how is it that "straight from the camera" allows "advanced editing"?

As was stated in another thread, the member challenge is "Advanced Rules" by default, but the "Special Rules" listed later over-ride that.

Is it just me, or are there an incredible number of requests for validation in this one? I almost feel bad that no one requested validation on mine...

Cool, thanks. I hadn't seen the other thread, been fairly absent around here lately.

Whole bunch of folks did "Straight from the Camera" at the same time they did "Flowers", too.

I think I've noticed that the validations tend to be for portrait format. I'm guessing that many folks are forgetting that many cameras auto-rotate the image in the camera. I didn't realize it until this challenge, so I actually activated the feature in mine. :)

PS - what's the secret to posting someone else's "originally posted by"?

Use the quote button in the top right corner of the box instead of the reply button below it :)

So much for thinking a validation request/confirmation helps boost a score... :( lol
