anybody have any tips or tricks for using Nikon NEF files with adobe photoshop 7?

camera raw doesn't work with NEF files in PS7 :(
and I can't afford to upgrade to CS2 for a while.

Rawshooter Essentials is free and good. Get it while you can, because Adobe has bought it out.

that was a very fast response!! just downloaded it and it looks interesting, thanks mate :)

still wouldn't mind more hints and tips though.
just got the D50 a month ago so I'm just starting to play with RAW files and other features of DSLR.

You're welcome. There are quite a few tips that can come along when working with RAW. I'm sure there will be.

Others will likely disagree with me on this, but I do very little adjusting to the photos in RAW, leaving the image flat and unprocessed. I pretty much use the converter for WB correction only and maybe a little exposure correction.

Other than that, I do all the other processing in Photoshop. Things such as curves and sharpening go at the end of my workflow.

Double process landscape shots from RAW, and then combine the sky and ground in PS. Only tip I have really besides whats obvious within the program.

Oh yeah, RSE can't read the white balance info on NEF files (unless I'm mistaken). Try Bibble for that (pricey), or get Nikon Capture, or the new Capture NX, which looks pretty sweet.
