It went down...then up...I just can't cope with the suspense! I want to turn my scores off but I am too weak. The torture of it all is so addictive, lol.

I got a lovely comment saying it was gorgeous and original but probably too artsy for DPC so I am mentally prepared for the downhill slide. Revel in the moment I say :-)

Ya, creativity suffers on the site. Sitting at a 5.3. Oh well, knew it was coming. Looks like I get a DPC Underground entry...

Ha, I'm not Rikki. I don't think I've ever posted a fake score. I wish I were lying on this one... ;)

When you are working on your average vote received as a goal for the year, a score like this wipes out a 7+ score and puts you back where you started. It's a Sisyphean task I tell ya!
07/03/2006 12:27:32 PM · #135
Rikki did?!

Auwtsj, if that's the goal you've set, that's a hard one.

I'm only 0.1 point away from my score-goal. Woooeee! Exciting!

Up to a 6! Don't know how long it will last but I'll take it. I had been pondering my shot all week and I'm glad it came out the way I wanted it to.

Heck of a lot of good shots in here. I think it'll take a 6.5 at least to crack the top 20. I'm hanging in at 6.5ish so far with a very un-bearlike image, which pleases me since I hadn't intended to enter at all. Then I realized this was to be the start of the WPL2 season, so as team captain I had to put SOMETHING in, right? So I found a flower and shot some shots of it, yesterday afternoon, and just shoved it on in.

Turns out this challenge ISN'T the start of the season, but the entry was already there, so....

Anyway, ignore my ramblings and soldier on, people!

R.

I received this comment:

"pretty flowers, well taken image but doesn't go beyond that. No drama in the lighting or presentation. 6"

Did I miss something? Was there some hidden rule in the flower competition that the flowers needed to be taken in studio lighting and/or some postprocessing digital art must be used to change the background to all black?

People are certainly entitled to their opinion. However, it bothers me some to have extra parameters or rules applied when voting, about which I was unaware.

hahn...sounds to me like he was saying that it was a well taken photo of some pretty flowers, but nothing really makes the photo stand above the rest. I've seen a few of those where it's a good photo, good flower, but nothing that makes it stand out or unique.

That is just what I got from your post.

This was not me, but I get it. I think the point they are trying to make is that in a Flower competition, a photo of a flower has to be outstandingly special. A 6 isn't a bad vote for an unimaginitive but technically okay photo that meets the challenge.
07/03/2006 02:28:48 PM · #146
Actually, I left you that comment. I gave you a 6 for a nicely taken image. There are plenty of non studio shots in this challenge that have dramatic lighting and/or presentation. They scored 7 and higher. Yours was not and so did not.

This is why I try so hard not to comment any more.

There is no hidden rule or extra parameters. I could have just said nice shot and moved on. I told you why I scored it that way. Just my expectation that a photographer who wants to score high will take an image that deserves a high score.

I think you can read it this way..."after looking at 300 flower shots, this one doesn't jump out at me. However your technicals were well done. 6"

A 6 is a solid score. It's only going to hurt you if you are in the top 15% of photos, otherwise it will help.

I'm not speaking for the commenter (and it wasn't me) but I think they are saing with so many strong entries in the Flower challenge, you'll need something to set your image apart form the rest. If so, I must say I agree. I am very impressed with many of the entries. I find my scoring to be a bit more critical in this challange than in others since the compitition is so high.

Thanks to everyone for the responses.

dahkota, no need to get snippy and try to slap me down. I was simply asking an honest question. I truly suspected I had missed some rules about studio lighting or mandatory postprocessing.

I truly regret entering this flower challenge.

I wouldn't be snippy if you just PMed me and asked. Calling into question my scoring, opinion, and commenting makes me snippy.

You shouldn't regret entering the challenge. We all take our lumps. I have a slew of them...
