I have just realized that there were well over "400" entries in the "Bokeh" challenge, to be exact, 428 entries. I have looked through the first few pages of the results, and noticed the following; (the highest number of vote that I found, was 299)

292 votes for 1st. place
272 votes for 2nd. place
273 votes for 3rd. place

Does that mean out of everyone who entered, some didn't bother to vote. I think a small number of people who enter challenges, never like vote or comment, if they have an entry, and thats ok.

I was really just curious, thats all.

By the way, "CONGRATULATIONS" to the top five, as they all deserved there placing.....

If it's a Members Only challenge, you can look at the entries, but you can't vote.

That's about probably the average vote. Many people don't vote on the challenge that they enter.

Not everyone votes 100% of the entries.

I didn't say look, I said vote.....

Yes, I didn't consider this, (silly me) so I guess that would make a differance.....

My personal policy is that if I enter the challenge I feel obligated to vote on all the other images. As faidoi mentioned, some people have the reverse (or as I would call it, "backwards") policy.

To each his own though. :)

It's only OK as long as the number of people doing it stays small. Personally, I think it's kind of a cop-out.

Well of course. When you have an entry in that's just all the more reason to go around handing out 1's and 2's ;)

I'm one of the "vote on every image in challenges I enter" types. If I entered, I'm at least familiar with the challenge subject, and more often than not, am very impressed with how others interpreted it. I also think that if I want votes, I should give them to others as well. But as our dear Art pointed out, to each his own.

I like what you say, and I also agree, so therefore, I think you "ROCK" girl.....

I also vote on every challenge that I enter. And give an honest a vote as possible.
I find it very time consuming and so my lack of comments is probably my shortcoming.

Bokeh wasn't a members only challenge.

Well, as an interesting comparison, check out the voting on the "30 Seconds" challenge...

Only 166 entries, but a massive 68507 votes. That's an average of almost 410 votes per entry! (almost double the average votes of the Bokeh challenge)

And the views were staggering too...
604 views for 1st place
1012 views for 2nd place
783 views for 3rd place

So what does that mean?
Are people more interested in viewing, voting on and learning from 30 second exposures?
Do people simply not know what "bokeh" is, so never bothered to look at the challenge?

Or is it simply that people are daunted by the 428 entries on the Bokeh challenge, and couldn't find the time to work their way through all of those entries?

Not sure, but it will be interesting to see if the trend repeats itself on the 97 Superstition entries vs 260 Glass entries...

I do not vote on challenges I enter. I vote on the others. I feel it is wrong to vote on a challenge you enter. You can't help but be toned by the fact you have an entry in it. I did vote on Bokeh, but only got to 40%. Most of the time I try to vote 100%, but there were just too many for me to digest and stick with. I kept losing interest, going to the community member boards, looking up camera equipment, looking at peoples portfolios, looking everywhere but at the challenge. I think that the more entries in a challenge, the harder it is to vote 100%. The only ones that are heavily entered that I find I can vote 100% are the free studies or best of.

that's my theory. every time there is a challenge with a lot of entries, someone marvels that there aren't a lot of votes, but I actually expect there to be fewer votes for the reason above. I myself didn't vote on the Bokeh challenge because

1) there were so many entries, and I like to vote all or none
2) I didn't participate in it myself
3) I couldn't bear the thought of slogging through all those macro shots

I generally don't vote on challenges where I think I may be in the top 10, but otherwise, I will vote.

I don't want to second-guess myself as to whether I subconsously voted a photo lower than I would have otherwise had I not been in contention.

Unfortunately, this "conflict of interest" doesn't occur often enough.

i tend not to vote on challenges that i've entered... and if this puts me squarely at odds with ken, as he states above, then i feel even better about making the right decision...

LOL! I'm pretty sure I'm not going to run into this problem. :-) Hopefully you will, though!

I can't help but be a wee bit (very wee) perturbed by the big difference in the vote of COMMENTERS vs. NO CAMERA voters on my entry. Don't get me wrong, I am thrilled with the score. And while I'm mentioning it, can any math whiz explain what the breakdown would be to generate a 4.222? The closest I can figure is 4.333 generated by 3 votes totalling 13 (eg, 4, 4 and 5). Just curious, really.

Average Vote per Commenters: 8.611
Average Vote per Users w/ Cameras: 6.566
Average Vote per Users w/out Cameras: 4.222

a number that repeats indefinitely is a fraction over 9, so your score is probably 4 2/9. I would guess that 9 people without cameras voted on your picture.

3 - 3's
16 - 4's
7 - 5's
1 -6

That's one combination. I don't know how many total non-camera voters there were... does it say somewhere?

I started out votomg in any challenge myself of my co-worker entered. I've never thought of giving all others 1s and 2s, as mentioned here. I think most people are generally honest.

We should vote and comment like we want others to do to our entry. A simple "Good" or "Bad" isn't helpful.

If you get tired of commenting, just keep a list of your "canned" comments in a Notepad window and Copy/Paste from it, and occasionally some specifically related information.

The resonsons for results of any statistics is that we are all human.

i dont really mind if someone enters a challenge and does not vote in that challenge. But I wish they would make a rule vote for one vote for all. By allowing the voter to stop at 20% you are basically screwing 80% of the entries out of a better score. And because it is up to the voter to pick which 20% they vote for it never works out

It isn't so bad to look at my score of 5.0 and see that I got 300 votes But then I look at the guy that scored 7.0 in the same challenge and see that he got 550 votes.

If I can not vote for every picture in the challenge I will not vote period. Because I don't think it is fair to any of you or myself if I only vote for the photos that stand out or if I just get lazy and decide that 20% is enough or what ever the reason may be that I didn't vote for everyone.

I'm one of the "vote on every image in a challenge" voters. I will chose to vote on every image or not vote at all. I'm one of those people that believes that I do not do the submitting photographers justice if I pick and chose what I vote on.

If it is a challenge I entered then I bring up my own image last and rate it as if it were not mine.

That being said, I am not the least bit surprised that the number of voters in a challenge is less than the number of submiters, especially in one with more than 200 entries. Most folks do not have the time rate all the images in challenges with large numbers of submissions.
