As a long time member of this site I've witnessed a serious decline in the quality and number of comments being made in challenges. And I asked myself WHY?

After much thought, I've identified a few areas where this problem began. The most significant has been the forums. Traditionally, the site has tried very hard to allow everyone to say what they think without impediment. I think freedom of speech is crucial, but I also think that with that, we've neglected to enforce any rules of politeness and decorum.

So I humbly suggest to all who are pissed off at the "voters", ie. the rest of us nitwits who don't "get" your vision of the challenge, either

a) get over it! it happens to everyone and its just a score and a virtual ribbon

OR, if you MUST say something, be constructive and polite. Be tolerant of alternative views, even if you think they are garbage. Try to understand where the commenter is coming from before you compose your vitriol and unleash it upon the site.

There is always more than one way to say something, and I urge all users to think about that before they post.

Even though my finger is on the refresh button when I am on-line, and see points going up and down... and even I am new here (kind of), I am having blast... It is fun and exciting... When points drop a few notch, I go "oh man", but that's it... if they go up I go "yesss"...

We all play lottery, and buy 1 dollar dream each time, most likely know we won't hit anything... The time we own the lottery ticket is the most exciting time for us to dream and have fun...

Probably my sample wasn't good enough, but what I wanted to say is that "have fun with it" :) with your challenge photos I mean :)

can I complain about voters as long as I don't mention specific voters? :)

p.s. I never complain about commentors. I praise commentors for bravely revealing the flaws in the voters! :)

What is the point in complaining about anything... commentators, voters, etc, etc? We're all here to have a good time and learn from each other. I think we all have enough stuff in everyday life to complain about without the need to come here and do something that we enjoy, only to have more complaints and bs that I know I'd rather not deal with. The same can also be said for the 'flaming and overall negative attitudes... WHAT'S THE POINT?

Very well put! Threads that start out "I don't want to be rude, but how did this shot ribbon and mine didn't?" are a bit overzealous and vindictive. Everybody has shots that they really love that don't do as well as expected, just accept it and move on.

I agree with your sentiment. Personally, I think it's the competitor that resides in many of us that pushes buttons generating spur of the moment forum postings. Generally over time the skin thickens and it becomes a much happier, smoother ride. ;^)

What?? Blasphemy!

Tasteless whining and complaining is a fundamental right of everyone regardless of race, creed, country of national origin or the color of thier oversaturated images.

Repression of tasteless whining and complaining is the first step in the inexhorable march toward totalitarianism.

Whiners Unite! Fight the injustice!

how can you say that? my very happiness depends on the love and acceptance of a bunch of people on the web that i don't know and will never meet. by the way this is totally normal and does not mean that i need to get a life....

I just think it's funny... people complain that nobody leaves a comment when they vote low. Then when someone votes low AND leaves a comment - people complain about that too!

I'd rather have the comment - at least I understand where they are coming from even if I humbly disagree. :-)

That is a great post frisca and am glad to see an SC member make it. Take your comment, be happy someone even took the time to do it, and move on. However, there is something else that bothers me even worse than that.

I don't like it when people complain about the subjects people shoot. Frankly I'm a bit tired of, "God, another flower shot" or, "C'mon people. Why so many waterfalls?" or, "another water drop". I think it discourages site activity because people are being labeled as uncreative and was personally happy to see the recent Flower challenge posted. It's funny, but you can go to the portfolios of the people who complain about these things and find many shots that have been done over and over. It may not be a flower, waterfall or water droplet, but a rainbow, eagle or bug macro. Either way, whether they've been done to death or not, I still like'm!

Personally I wouldn't mind seeing the bitching and moaning about voters / commentors locked when they come up, with an SC comment about how this isn't tolerated. These threads, when they are inflamatory, serve no real purpose and simply drive people from helping.

If they are, however, honestly asking wtf in a constructive manner, that's another story and I trust SC to make that judgement call.

For the 'oh censors forbid' crowd, I refer you to mk25.
