Why does most photographers choose 20D especially in the ‘site favorites’ choose 20D over Rebel xt. I got my Rebel xt for $700 total (with lens) for 8.0 mp. 20D goes for over $1000 for 8.2 mp. Why is it that 20D is picked by pros more then xt?

Has more features, it has a deeper buffer, it has 5fps shooting vs 3fps, it has iso 3200 support, it has better build quality, etc.

Comparison

That link should answer most questions ;)

Basically it can do more things that the XT cannot do. Once you start learning about how to use your camera in all the Creative modes, in tough to shoot situations, and possibly sports, you'll really start to understand where the differences are.

Basically, he said the 20d will take more pictures in a second than the xt, has faster "film" speed (good for low light) and is metal instead of plastic.

Two more things that I like ... a larger body (fits my hands better) and longer battery life.

Well now that I have a 30D I will say the things I like more about the 30D compared to the XT is the camera is bigger and fits my hane better and the huge lcd.

Also not to sound mean but the XT just makes me think of soccer moms.

yes but it's still pretty darn small :-/ The battery life is a major plus!

Maybe because their commercial is about soccer moms?

20D is more expensive, bigger, heavier, older technology and the photo quality is the same as the XT.

20D has a few better features like ISO 3200, a hot synch plug in for strobs, I think a faster max shutter speed, 5fps vs 3fps, the controls are different and it's a better ergonomic design so it feels better in your hands.

Yeah the XT is built for and marketed to consumers and soccer mom's (I don't consider that a negative) but it is just as capable as the 20D minus a few featues that many people would never miss. So if you don't have the cash, want to save a few bucks and buy some good glass instead, or size and weight is a priority, it is still a great purchase.

To me, the two major differences between Canon's entry level (300D Rebel & 350D Rebel XT) and the mid level (20D & 30D) are the metal chassis and the 5 fps burst rate. The metal chassis means the mid level cams are built tougher, can withstand rougher treatment and will last longer. Also they are larger and heavier which makes them feel better to me. The 5 fps (frames per second) means the mids can shoot very fast, which is useful for shooting sports and other action photography.

I remember with my 300D the endless wait after I filled the tiny buffer. snap, snap, snap, snap...1, 2, 3, 4, 5. snap, snap, snap, snap...1, 2, 3, 4, 5.

When I got my 30D, I just held down the shutter button to see how long it would go. I stopped at 12 snaps (the camera would have kept going) and there was no camera down time waiting for the buffer to empty. The read-write technology (at least of the 30D) is parallel rather than series - it writes and reads at the same time. Amazing when you shoot sports, events, candids, etc. God knows how many shots I lost waiting for the buffer to empty on the 300D. For me, the extra money was well worth it.

I'm just curious. I have a 10D hack installed on my 300D, which pretty much gives me the advanced features of the 10D such as rear curtain flash sync and flash compensation.

Is there such a hack for the 350D XT to get the more advanced features of the 20D?

Canon likely took measures to make such a hack more difficult with it's new model, but I'm sure there are some people working on it.

I've never heard of a 350D hack, not sure if it'll happen or not.

I had a 300D and knew at the time the 20D was better...not that it mattered to me. As a hobbyist, it probably doesn't matter.

Then i started to do this for money - and moved to a 20D and 30D (as a pro you need backup equipment if you want to keep a good reputation)

The difference is immense, in many small ways. That leetle LCD on top of the camera, the buttons for direct access to things, the wheel on the back, the much faster and more accurate focus (with 2.8 ap lenses), better focus in low light, custom functions, better build...

Is the picture quality or size 'better' on a 20D than a 350xt? Maybe not, but under tough conditions I can get the photo, a 350XT user can't. FOr a hobbyist it does not matter, but for a pro it does.

I don't want the weight and complexity of a 1D body - but it is a magnitude better under tough conditions than a 20/30D. My friend has one - he gets more keepers than me (AF speed and accuracy, more accurate metering, better WB). So one day...

I wish they had a hack for the XT for rear curtain sync, too.. Even my powershot G5 had it.
