very well done! you kinda butchered some names, but that's ok :)

interview requests:

Larus - i want a voice to go with all that trash talk

mk - something tells me she sounds like Daria from MTV

I mean this in an honest, unmean way but have you read the rules about filters? They are pretty specific about what is and isn't allowed.

Haha...I think you'll be surprised then. :)

Part of my job is actually recording audio narration for tutorials that I write. People always say "you sound so nice and professional!" That is inevitably followed by "It doesn't sound like you at all!"

Regarding the pronunciaition of names, I was wondering if I should just drop that part entirely and only refer to people by their username. I have a bad feeling the running joke will be how bad will I mess up people's names this week. I know how important names are to people and when you hear your name pronounced wrong it drives you nuts. I wanted to use names when possible to give the photographer a little "fame" but maybe it's best just to avoid it?

mk actually TALKS? I always imagined you to be a quiet brooder...

pronouncing the username might be worse :)

seriously, though, I think that choice is yours (but when i start my string of bluey's ... it's "my low", and not "mill low" or "mee low").

also, it would be cool to have some "opinion" segments regarding voting, challenge desription interpretation, favorite photos and why, etc. perhaps even a genre appreciation snippet to entice voters to give submissions other than tack sharp studio shots a high score :)

Just listened to your podcast and I thought it was pretty good. Thanks for doing that - it must have taken a lot of work. I enjoyed it and would certainly listen to it weekly. I agree with Art about more sound effects. I think that it's cool that you go into the winners' profiles and read their information (including their names), so even if you mispronounce a few I still think they would like having their names mentioned.

Great job! I'm looking forward to next week's! Thanks!

I really liked it. Clever & funny.

Good stuff! Finally someone made a podcast for DPChallenge! Very well done! Will tune in next time!

Cheers!

I am quite ignorant in things "podcast", so the following question isn't meant in any mean way at all, it just shows that I'm clueless.
The bit I don't get is this: What's the point of spending that much time reading out challenges and winners? I need to have internet access to download the podcast anyway, so why wouldn't I simply look at DPC for that info?

Interviews, gossip etc are a different matter, they aren't available on the website, and could be interesting.

I agree with other comments and suggestions previously made, and would like to add my own:

1) Please turn down that music, I nearly fell out of my chair when it suddenly started.
2) You have a great voice for this, and I'm not suggesting that I don't want to hear it, but it might be nice to hear other voices, too.
Interviews are one way, but would it be possible to get others to record certain sections (like a tutorial or an anecdote) and incorporate those in your podcast?

It all sounds like a lot of work, but if you're willing to do it, I'm sure we're happy to enjoy the fruits of your labor.
Thank you!

If you downloaded the podcast please reply here and let me know what you think or how it could be done better.

I haven't had a chance to listen to it yet, but I will tonight sometime. Are you planning to make it available on iTunes?

Ok, I finally listened. I think the idea is fun and you have a great voice. I'd definitely listen again. That being said, I have to agree some with Beetle. I'm not all that interested in listening to 15 minutes of information that I've already gathered in 2 minutes of reading the site. I think interviews, commentary, discussion, whatever will be much more interesting than here's the scores and here's the upcoming challenges. I do hope that you do it again. And perhaps look into putting it on itunes like John asked about.

Good luck with your score. ;)

Thanks to all of those who have been providing input. I'm starting a log of all the suggestions and it looks like there is enough interest to warrent an episode 2. I'll try to work as many of the comments into episode 2 as is reasonable.

Someone asked the question about "Why podcast?" That's a legitimate question. Some people would rather listen than read and if they can download it to an mp3 player they can listen why the walk, exercise, or in some cases even while they work. This allows them to have their computer free for other purposes while still getting an update. Also, the personal touch can sometimes be nice. It's less formal and hopefully a little fun. Lastly, and this person also hit the nail on the head, the idea of a good podcast is to have interviews, guest speakers, etc etc. I still found reading some tidbits about the photographers who one the challenge something that might benefit others. Many people just look at the picture and say, "that's nice" and would never follow the profile link to see the information I read to them. In this way they get some details they might not have taken the time to look at themselves.

Actually...this would be hilariously funny I think! You could sing Art's rendition song of Chit Rabbinton too! I'm easily amused :)

Thanks for the clarification. I see your point, but I am still not terribly interested in a long session of things that I could read on DPC very quickly, yet I'd love to hear things I can NOT read about.

How about - as I think mk suggested - having all the interviews, gossip, guests etc etc first, then challenges/results etc at the end?
06/21/2006 01:28:36 PM · #43
Just so you know I didn't ignore the comment, I will look into getting the podcast on iTunes.
06/21/2006 01:48:23 PM · #44
Damn fine idea Lee! I'm downloading it right now.

On the topic of interviews and having had some exposure to the "pleasures" of doing them over the phone, Skype is actually a great option if you have the software to record directly to your PC.
I'd be all over hearing about what went into pictures from the winners other than "Crop-Rotate-Levels etc..." and what the thought process was.

Perhaps down the road posting who is to be interviewed (I vote for JoeyL and Rikki) and then some questions can be asked by the general population. Now, whether it's a live voice interview or just done via email I think it would be great.

Whatever happens, I think what you're doing is awesome! And I second that DPC should be behind it.

Great job on the podcast! I am foremost impressed that you said my last name right dannels, and not daniels, it such a common mistake I have ceased to correct people anymore. Some of the parts I really liked was when you were talking about your own entry and what voters had thought about, because I could go find this photo and look at as you were talking about. I don't have an ipod and would most likely never listen the cast away from a computer so I enjoyed that. You have a great voice, I think in the beginning when you are explaining how many challenges you can enter between open and member challenges it gets abit hard to follow between the two open challenges you can enter one, but if there are two member challenges you can enter both so in total.... My guess would be that most listeners are going to be very familiar with this and wouldn't be necessary to repeat in future podcasts. I think interviews would be great, and this was fun to hear and thanks for all the work you put into this, I would definitely listen to this again.

Thanks again for all the feedback. I'm going to look into testing Skype for recording interviews tonight. Does anyone have a Skype account who might be available for a test recording? I'd also like to interview on of last weeks winners for the first interview...like was suggested I'd ask questions about the thought process that went into the photo, the prep, the post processing, etc, etc as well as getting to ask a few personal question about the individual so we can know them as a human being.

06/21/2006 03:08:35 PM · #48
And hey, Joe, if you are available I'd be more than happy to have you be my first interview for Episode 2!
06/21/2006 03:10:41 PM · #49
Awsome...Just a little less time reading off the rules word 4 word...If we r listening 2 a 20 minute podcast on dpc, we probually know how it works.
06/21/2006 04:11:12 PM · #50
Jusdino4it, read you loud and clear. To be honest I didn't plan on explaining the open challenge rules every week but figured I'd cover a different DPC concept every podcast that would benefit new visitors to the site as well. Additionally, I'm going to try and move away from reading anything "word for word" as well. Whenever possible I will try to hit the key points and put it in my own words. I appreciate all the constructive criticism which should go a long way to improving the podcast in the future.
