hello i have a question from my sister (if you can draw her a picture id be great) lol

She wants to know if the Canon PowerShot S3 is a good famely cam.

she is a photography novice and just wants it for fun.. no other thoughts behind it then taking pictures of everyday live and for school perhaps (she is learning landscape designer thingy)

She does have a very active and picture loving 8 year old boy and then a less then year old boy as well.

would the camera weather well?
Is it good for this purpose?

Thank you :D

The S3 is an excellent camera for that. It actually may be overkill, but I don't think you can ever have too much.

I'd definitely endorse an S3IS, they are beautiful cameras and will serve your sister well.

The lense on this camera is quite fast (f/2.8 at the wide end), it's speed is enviable (start-up and shots/second), the zoom is excellent (12x, +400mm telephoto), and the IS comes in very handy. I struggle to imagine a better P&S camera for someone with an active kid.

My S1-IS lasted through a year of abuse without issue (past tense: it was lost by a friend, not broken). I love my DSLR but honestly I miss the ease and feel of the S1.

Its most likely a fantastic option for her.
I have the S2 IS and it's amazing.
I personally love it.

My biggest response is size, size, and size. Think about what she wants the camera for. If this is a camera to put in her purse and take where ever she goes, I wouldn't go for the S3 based on its size. Something like a SD400 or SD500 will give her more portability. It may not have the IS or some other fancy features, but if she doesn't take the camera with her, it won't be any good.

Hey, I'm actually selling my S1 on Ebay if she wants to take a look at it. I really suggest the whole Line (1,2 and 3)

I got an XT and a 30D and will not sale my S1. Remember that swivel screen sure can come in handy sometimes.

I have an S3, and it's not what I'd reccomend for the purposes you describe. It''s too big and bulky, and has pretty bad shutter-lag. I carry around my Olympus D490z for everyday shooting.

Under these conditions I've been recommending something along the line of the Olympus Stylus series, which are weather-resistant (fog or a little rain are no problem) or the Pentaz Optio WPi, which is actually waterproof to a depth of five feet (think swimming pool).

I have to disagree with the general here ;-)

The S3 is easy and fun to use. It also takes pretty good movies. The manual options are also easy to get at, so if your sister ever decides to get more into photography, it's a good camera to learn with.

I bought the S3 as a carry-around camera even though I was advised against it here in the forums. It fits perfectly in my purse, with room to spare. The only thing about size is that if you buy a case for it, it might be too big. Instead of a regular case, I use a lens bag to protect it - the cases for the S3 made it too big to fit in my purse. Works great!

thank you all for your advise and opinions.

We have been talking (me and my sister) and she says she would not like the "ordinary purse camera"

and sinse we are known bugster(we get into everything we start on with passion)

she will most likly get very much into photography once started.

Good idea! I just bought a bag for mine yesterday, and I ended up with one designed for a video camera, and it's pretty big, though I'm allowing room for accessories. With an adapter ring, you can attach a sun shade, or wide-angle or telephoto lenses.

If video is important and you don't want to buy a separate video camera -- one of the reasons I bought mine -- the S3 is a good option: it can go into movie mode at any time by pusing one button, can zoom during shooting, and captures full-size video with stereo sound (or 1/2-sized video in 60 fps slow-motion). The only downside to that aspect is there's a limit of 1GB for any single clip (about 8 minutes), and the large-capacity SD cards aren't that cheap.

But still, with the lens extended, it's about twice as big as most of the P&S cameras around now.
