hi dudes/dudetes,
i was wondering if you asked yourself: "do i have photographic style ?"
or do you play more on versatility side ...
this is question for amateurs more likely, right ? but pros can also
ansewer on this "question" :-)
i guess it's nice to have your own "style" but i must admit it's surely not easy to pursue it all the time ...

so, whaddayasay ? :-)
peace

I dont think I have a style yet. Before coming here my style was kid snapshots - not much of a style but it was basically all I did. Now I am just experimenting and seeing what comes out. The challenges here surely stretch me into areas that I have never played with and I seem to be growing and learning well. Overall I just want to be able to take technically good and somewhat creative pics. Good and creative - is that a style?

I have no idea what my style is lol. I just shoot what I feel compelled to shoot.

I wonder if being able to identify certain photographers in a challenge is a good or a bad thing. Or if it's really just a matter of taste.

Is having a certain style a good or a bad thing? (speaking generally)

Maybe a little of both :)

Is it easier for us to identify our persoanl style or is it for someone else to identify our personal style?

You can ask my wife... I have no style. :-(

I donĀ“t think I have a personal style. Maybe someone looking at my photos can make something out...

I think even pro's had to be versatile to truly hone their skills into a specialised field.

Take Bear_music for instance. Excellent photographer overall, but his niche clearly lies with landscape shots which he does so majestically.

For him to have gotten there, mustve been as a result of being versatile?

(I stand corrected Robert lol)

As for style, I have seen a few on dpc where the style is inherently prominent in each and every photograph - specially when you click on the portfolio and all the thumbnails 'look and feel' the same.

Try Goodman, or Joey Lawrence, even Heida.

There are a select few here, however, that I have seen as truly versatile in style and presentation like kiwiness.

I would imagine they would treat each photograph as a new challenge and use different steps to get to a result.

But they're all masters of their craft in the end...

:P

I do have a style but I think its not that noticible in my profile here. i think because i try to steer away from it in these challenges in order to garner a higher vote. (it not workin. lol), but my style is simplistic, clean and modern, photos consiting of usually just the one object, but i like my life that way too. no knick knaks around the house, just clean lines and clutter free. except for the many pictures on the walls. :)

If I have a style, it's conceptual, not visual. I aim for versatility, with a wide variety of subjects and processing techniques, but some people can pick out my photos anyway. I'm not sure if that's good or bad.

Style is what evolves when a photographer does what they want to do while taking pictures and take pictures for their own personal reasons. It and the way they image process is an extension of their personal likes, dislikes and unique vision.

Kiwiness has often said that when he enters the type of pictures he likes they do not often do well at DPC. So he doesn't enter them. Instead his DPC entries are specifically designed to please the DPC voter and get high scores. He can provide the customer what they want. It is an amazing skill that will always serve him well in whatever he does in photography and explains his great versatility with DPC entries without a detectable style.

I think I have moods rather than an overall style.

i think my high scoring images have a certain style
but possibly more how i think about the subject

i'm pretty sure you can seperate the photo style from the processing style ...

If by "Style" you mean "Trend in my finished results", I'd have to say I don't have a style. Every day is a new day, Every shot is a different one.

For me a "Style" would close a lot of doors of opportunity. If I admitted to a "Style" I fear that my shots would be driven to that end result right from start. Subject, composition and post-p would all be similar.

Galleries are loaded with style, people like to see series of photos with the same subject, same post-p technique...

I couldn't throw together a Gallery Series for the life of me.
I wander, I see, I shoot...and I like it.

I hope I'll never be stuck in a recognizable narrow style.

I'd hate to enter/shoehorn the same type of photo, done to the same type of formula, in nearly every challenge.
That is just too tedious; I much prefer to try different things/styles according to subject matter.

i think i'm still building my 'style' but feel i'm fairly versatile.

i don't think anyone at this point can look at one of my unlabelled photos and say 'thats a jeff hayward'.

Dont worry about what style you have keep shooting and as you get better eventually you will see a shot and think "hey that looks like something I would shoot".

I've tried very hard to explore lots of different "styles" and experiment with various editing techniques, subjects, and compositions. I'd like to think that I am versatile, but I've also been told that I have a very distinctive style - that some members can recognize my stuff right away. I can't see it necessarily... I know what I like and don't like. And frequently what I 'like' doesn't score well. ROFL :-)

I dunno... My style is really to have my photos in focus, as for vesatility, I am not really that versatile, I just take pictures of pretty things that are around me :)

Style of a photographer is a fingerprint... I believe everyone has a style, but some probably don't realize it.

Style could come out after a while. Because if new to photography, need to take some amount of pictures until adjust the style. There are some photographers I know (I think I know) that changes style later on... because they get bored from one style... Even then you could see some similarities on their "different" styles with old ones.

I do have a style. I still need to do some more adjustments, but I think in general I know how I want to pursuit my photography life ;)

I think "getting better" in photography is "adjusting the style" better?
