Ok I am tired of not commenting in fear of retaliation. I think the photographers and this site deserves better than that. I have seen talk of people including myself complaining that the site has reversed itself in the last year of so and people are not willing to help others as much. I for one have not been commenting like I should. Look at my profile, never should there be that much forum post and that little comments. So as of today I am going to speak my mind on your challenge photo. Some may think I’m being harsh, so may think I’m wrong, and others may think I’m right. But when it’s all said and done the comment I leave will be what I feel was good about your photo and what I feel was bad about your photo. I may also input some suggestions. All comments will be for the benefit of learning not only for you but for me as well.

I believe that part of becoming a better photographer is evaluating someone else’s work. So commenting should help me and I hope it helps you. Please don’t take any of my comments as rude for I’m not that kind of person. But do take them as what I see and believe even if you don’t agree. Some comments maybe long and others short but I believe we both will have learned a little at the end.

Whoooo! This is great to hear. I hope you'll be commenting on something of mine soon and I will be able to learn something, even if it's a perspective on why someone thinks my photo stinks.

:-)

Hey Scott,
If you truely want to give honest critiques to those who WANT them, and have no fear of negative retaliation, you ARE a member of the Critique Club still...Drop by for a Crit or 2 and help us kill that queue. :)

I like your view, and comments are good. How can you get any better when you refuse to listen to both the positive as well as the negative feedback? You need both; you have to know what works and what not to do again, and you'll never know that as long as you're in denial against anything someone says that is not praising your work.

People as whole, everywhere, seem to be getting more and more sensitive and it sucks that it's not ok anymore to tease people, and not ok to tell someone the truth when it's harsh for fear that, heaven forbid, somebody might feel bad. I understand where the 70's love and peace movement was trying to go, but we can't realistically and productively live in that kind of a world.

and there's my rant for the day, lol

I got your comments on my pic, Scott, and I sent you a nasty PM with a virus and an incendiary device. I'll show you "a little more DoF"! >:|

I've been hangin' around this site for over a year now and have learned a tremendous amount of info!
I WANT comments good or bad. It's the only way I'm going to learn.
Thanks Scott! I'll take a critique from you any ol' day!
Thanks!
Becky

Just read Art's reply and am still laughing! I see you're still in to those magazine covers.

I totally agree with you, Southern Gentleman.

I received one of your comments on my entry for the Beatles Challenge by the way. Thanks a lot. It was a very helpful comment and you also described very well what could be improved. I totally agree with it.

On the Dutch forum I'm a member of the people are more critical than here most of the time. I've learned a lot from that, especially from the negative comments.

Sometimes I want to give more critical comments but I'm not always sure about whether it's appreciated or not.

Definitely. But I am disapointed that I got no honest, disparaging comments from SG. :(

Kidding aside, I like to imagine a world where everyone can give their honest opinion and nobody PM's them or calls them out in the forums with anything but a "thank you" or "...helpful". People need to remember "IMO" is inherent in anyone's comments - take them or leave them.

too late to retract my incendiary device though - sorry, SG.

@Art_Roflmao: I totally agree with you.

I like being honest to eachother. Some people just can't handle negative comments, they feel that it's an attack on their personality or something. Like I said in my previous comment, most of the time we're more critical and honest to eachother on the Dutch forum, but it's not always appreciated. I just don't understand why. Don't we all learn from the negative critiques?

Chuckle - so we now have a critique club, a negative critique club and probably lying dormant somewhere is the "positive critique club for those of a more delicate disposition".

You can kind of imagine the critiques from the positive and negative clubs:

Critique from the Positive Critique Club For Those With A Delicate Disposition:

Hi! This is from the positive critique club and we wanted to tell you that the weather where we are is fine!

Have a nice day.

Critique From The Negative Critique Club:

Never in my life have I had to look at an image so repugnant at so many levels. The composition is crap, the colours washed out and the subject matter not worthy of the attention of an amoeba with a negative IQ. Your use of a camera can only be compared to the ineffectual ramblings of the village idiot, only he cannot help it!

Overall, this is a picture that should be condemned and cast into Dante's raging inferno and you should be admitted into a home for the photographic illiterate.

Hope this was useful.
