I am brand new here and must say I have loved the challenges that I have looked at so far. There are many many great photos all over this site. I am an advanced amateur at best and want to learn more.

I guess I'm what I am looking for is a sign that says "start here!"

Thanks,
Jim

START HERE!!!

Welcome Welcome!! You're gonna love it here. There are many wonderful, warm, caring, CRAZY folks here and they are so helpful (Judi, being my number one "folk" ha)! Click away, enter the challenges and you will see how this all works. But be warned: you need a tough skin sometimes, but, IMO, it makes you a much better photographer. Most opinions offered are good one, so don't get frustrated by the trolls....(and there are many....)
Enjoy!!

Hi Jim,

If you're looking for a good place to start, check out the "Learn" menu up at the top. There are a number of helpful tutorials and "how'd they do that" explanation of previous entries.

I'd also suggest taking a good amount of time to read the rules. The rules for basic editing are fairly simple but many people skip over them and end up violating them without meaning to.

The forums also contain a wealth of information. You're always free to ask questions here but it's usually a good idea to do a quick search first as lots of questions have been well answered already.

A few quick tips that people sometimes miss:

//jimonline.dpchallenge.com will take you to your profile page. This is especially helpful if you're sharing your portfolio.

Clicking on the "community" heading in the menu will allow you to browse all active threads in the past 24 hours. Very helpful if you're trying to keep up but not online 24/7.

If you have questions that you can't otherwise find answers for or are admin/Site Council specific, you can contact them by submitting a ticket through the contact page which is found under the Help menu.

That should get you started for now.

Welcome to DPC. :)

Hi jimonline, I'm a new registered user too. I just joined last week and am having a blast wandering around the site, enjoying the great photography and submitting to challenges.

Some tips:
1) You can only submit to one challenge at a time (for example, right now only Green OR Unexpected)
2) See this thread for simple newbie stuff I learned last week:

Hello and welcome...

The only time you can be in "1" challenge is when there is an "exclusive member challenge" going on. You can only enter "one" of those...however, for example, you could be in "Green II" right now and also the "Shadow" challenge!!!

Enter...enter ...enter...

ok, so exclusive open challenges appear in pairs? For example, if the following challenges were open for submission:

X: Exclusive open challenge
Y: Exclusive open challenge
Z: Open challenge

I could enter X and Z OR Y and Z, correct? Sorry, I just want to be sure I've got this correct.

There are generally only two open challenges running at a time, both are exclusive so you may pick one. There are 1-2 advanced challenges running at a time, you may enter as many of those as are available if you are a member, in addition to one of the open challenges.

X: Exclusive open challenge
Y: Exclusive open challenge
Z: Members Challenge
Z+: Members Challenge

So you can enter X OR Y if you're not a paid member. If you are, you can enter, X OR Y AND Z AND Z+. :)

Whoah.
That X, Y, Z thing just totally confused me.
I'm not in my right mind right now =P

Anyway, yeah.. WELCOME!
i as well joined a couple of weeks ago and I love it here.
I've only entered one challenge and I seem to be doing okay.
I'm definately not 'winning' but I've been getting some positive feedback that just makes it worth it anyway.
Hope you enjoy the site!!

If you're not a paid member, all you need to know is that you can enter one of the two open challenges and that's it. You can worry about the rest when you pay. ;)

OK, got it. Thanks.

Agreed, I'm definitely not "winning" but, from what I've seen as far as averages go, I am very happy to be over 6 in my first challenge.

Where's that thread that someone started a few months ago that was about DPC lingo and recurring thread topics and the like? I think greatandsmall (Roxanne) wrote it. That was a good thing for newbies to look over.

Oh, and the Tutorials are good to check out, under the "Learn" link. I especially recommend this one if you aren't sure about preparing photos for submitting to DPC.
Welcome to the site!
