This is nothing more then some general observations for newcomers into the world of photography. I just want to make sure that you understand that your efforts will not go unnoticed. This place goes through changes in voting blocks, by this I mean, that there are changes where new faces appear and others disappear and each new group brings its own qualities. Yet, there are some commentators whose object is not to encourage but rather to point out flaws with such passion that the overall impact of the image is forgotten. They forget that not long ago they themselves suffered the very weakness which they now so boldly attack. There is a tint of disdain in their opinions which does not help the beginner.

It is competition and you must grow a thick skin because you must survive in order to improve. Do not give up because your last effort failed. Carry on and make it a point to learn as much as possible about your craft/art. Like I advise elsewhere, make it a habit to go through every image in each challenge in order to appreciate and also to gauge your progress. The image that you admire today will one day be within your grasp to reproduce. Looking and studying images will also encourage you to bite the bullet and do whatever you need to improve your presentations.

The important thing is not to throw in the towel because a thoughtless commentator crushed your spirits. After all, you did make the image and you had an idea of what you wanted. Not even the most professional realize their ambition on every take but it is not so bad with them because their batting average is simply better. Since you are new, the best way to succeed is by being persistent in your visualization of what you want. You need more ideas because many will be above your current pay grade in abilities. Therefore, you must select those that will offer the least technical abilities but make it a point to study a small facet of photography weekly. learn about lenses, even if you currently own a fixed lens. Examine the properties of dof, study composition and above all look through the many inspiring images that are at your fingerstips in the DPC archives. Make it a point to study and then to emulate, while you continue to express yourself within the current limitations. Growth is imperative and do not be shy to ask advise of member. Most will be happy to help, but keep in mind that you are responsible for the basics.

The digital darkroom is another pit of disppointment for those who do not study post processing techniques. Keep in mind that moderation is most important. Adjustments have a wide range but really, the usable range is rather limited. It is like when you listen to music: no need to have the volume all the way down if you are far away from the speaker nor have it blasting if it is next to your ears. Proceed with caution and whenever a drastic adjustment is required, the program will make it but at what cost? Perhaps it is better to reshoot.

Again, you bought your camera and you are ready to shoot. Bear in mind that all fields require that we pay our dues. Yours is to study so as to open up the many possibilties that await you. To repeat myself: look at as many images as you possibly can and this alone will fill you with enough wonder to pursue the technique and abilities required. Read those negative comments and ignore the bitterness or meaness in them. You are going to move forward and you are going to get better and better as you go. Always bear in mind that tomorrow you want to learn what you do not know today.

Be proud that you are partaking of this experience in one of the finest sites available. There is a lot of talent here and the majority of commentators are very humane. Pay attention to the overall weight of the comments. Herein lies some hints to improve your efforts.
