My current entry has been voted on 163 times (as of when this was posted), yet of those only 15 have commented. Is this a case of people voting at the beginning of the week, to come back and comment later? Or perhaps this particular challenge not very easy to comment upon?

I am actually gettin a higher percentage of comments this week than in the last two... For the last two challenges, I averaged 17% voter comments. This week is running a little higher...

hmmmm... maybe you have a better shot this week!

I'm doing better this week, with about 28% of voters commenting on my picture... quite a wide range of opinions though - which is interesting.

Yeah, this challenge seems to polarise people's opinions - they either think the photo meets the challenge, and give a (good) comment, or they think it doesn't meet the challenge, and thus don't comment (very positively)...

The scores I'm receiving so far indicate that this is the worst of my three challenge entries :)

I echo that, sure is disheartening when you've bust a gut setting up with numerous shots to get it right only to have a comment like 'lame' or 'not very original' with no constructive comment.

This also is my first entry, and the responses seem to be pretty well divided. Either they really like it, or say that a certain feature of teh shot really ruins it. Very polar responses, reflected by my current rating. Fun stuff though...

those seem to be on the rise. oh well, i just take them with a grain. honestly i think our much younger voters, esp those who don't really participate themselves in photography, are the ones who leave comments like that.

What is disheartening to me is that one of my comments tells me that I didn't meet the challenge... Fortunately, it's the ONLY comment like that.. :)

even more confusing when you have one comment saying "a little too typical" and another saying "very original" ... I think I know what they meant

hopefully some day I'll get lucky and take a shot that everyone likes :)

Well I've got one of the ugliest pictures up there and I'm at the 13.5% mark for comments to votes. I've had a couple of negative and non-constructive comments but I've also recieved some very good comments. Most of which I think helped me for the current challenge.

My comments on this current challenge have not been as complex as on the stopped motion challenge. I'm gonna try to do more formal comments on the upcoming challenge.

My biggest problem is that I'm more inclined to make detailed comments on photographs that I like. It's much more difficult for me to elaborate on a photograph where I don't like the subject of the photo. It's difficult for me to say "I think this photograph is as good as it can be with the subject you chose."

I almost always point out obvious technical problems like focus being out of whack... Depth of field is something I comment on in a reserved way. I have seen lots of photos where the depth of field is too narrow or too large for my personal tastes, but then again, depth of field can be a 'personal taste' characteristic of a photograph.

I voted on all of the pictures on the first day. Every day for the rest of the contest, I try to go back and make a few more comments. I find that its easier not to try to comment on all of the pictures in one session.

I agree with you completely... I finished voting on the current challenge in two days... I need to spread that out over a longer period of time. I find myself getting weary of making the comments when I try to do too many at one sitting...

that's also what i do. i used to try to do everything in one day, but now i realize i can't do that anymore.

yes, it's easier to say stuff about pics you like. i've heard that referred to as 'breaking the critique barrier:' where you gradually become more comfortable saying things that aren't always the most positive. i would personally like to know if my pic doesn't do anything for people - it doesnt help me to remain in the dark. of course it's the way the criticism is framed that's important.

I'm trying to figure out a way to do that without conveying 'arrogance' or making someone feel bad about their photo.

The last thing I want to do is to make someone unahappy with their own photo. I'm always happy with my photos that I submit here... Thats why I enjoy seeing what other people think about them...

I tend to do this by using language such as "to me", "I feel", "I think". It think it lets the person know that you're trying to be constructive w/o being arrogant. It seems to me to work better to say "I feel like the exposure could have been reduced a bit as the top seems a bit hot to me." As opposed to "This shot is overexposed." I'm trying to shift my comments in line with this. I also feel the first one gives a bit more information.

I'm just a lazy git. I hardly ever bother to comment.

"Maybe", "might", "seems", "if possible", "if you wanted", "if you could have" are also ways of making your comments appear more subjective (which they are, really), and therefore not quite as arrogant. Some might argue that it's the same net information either way, but I think the way it's presented makes a big difference. I know for me, I tend to reject comments I perceive as "arrogant" and pay more attention to those that phrase them the way mykoleary suggested.

I don't ever want to appear subjective either. I prefer objectivity when possible.
