About a year ago I met a young lady (we are just good friends). I remember the first time we spoke on the phone, she had a cold and oh, such a sexy husky voice (its a failing of mine). Well, her cold has gone but still has one of the sexiest voices of any women I know.

Miss Husky Voice (as she will currently be known) has a 'yellow' mobile phone and today she rang them to change her address as she recently moved. After all the normal passwords etc to prove she was the account holder the operator said they could not process the change of address as they did not believe she was a women!!! and suggested she went to a local store to identify herself and the store would then ring on her behalf to change her address.

I'm not picking on 'yellow' specifically because Miss Husky Voice has had similar issues with other companies and a 'problem' with her vocal gender.

Now, I have a very big problem with this as at no time after being refused transactions etc over the phone have her accounts been stopped/suspended (surely the first thing a company that suspected identity fraud would do?).

I have 2 reasons for writing this ...

1. Have any other women with horny, sexy deep voices ever been refused telephone transactions? - you should get together (and let me join in)

2. I gave Miss Husky voice a few ideas for combatting this situation and am sure the warped legal minds on this site can come up with good resolutions to this problem?

First off, thanks for the SC locking my double post (fat fingers syndrome).

Actually guys I have met with Miss Husky Voice and believe me, she is all woman! This is actually a serious problem for her and, I'm sure other equally sexy ladies.

I'm not aware of any company that requires you to "prove" your sex when you sign up for service. Why would they require it when you make changes to your valid account?

the company can make a notation on her account about her voice for future problems.

I have a deeper voice....I have never been refused service or made to prove my gender....but when I go through McDonalds (or talk on the phone) the other person usually say Sir instead of ma'am...and then when I pull around they have an odd look on their face :)

@ Kadi, my point exactly!

@ Colette, its something I suggested she asks for (oh, and I'm not farming husky voiced ladies - honestly)

That's outrageous! I would have raised he** over that one.

I have suffered some discrimination because of my voice. It would seem that I sound like "a 21 year old kid" on the phone. This has been said to me by many different customers who were hesitant to deal with me because they didn't believe I was old enough to know what I was talking about. After meeting in person and proving that I am old enough to know something (what I'm not sure?), they always apologize for not giving me due credit.

I wonder...does your "friend" know you've got the hots for her? ;)

Roxanne, your problem is that you look like a 21 year old as well as sounding like one! Oh, and Miss Husky Voice and I are just the best of friends ;)

*update*

As the call centre person suggested Miss Husky Voice went down to her local 'yellow' shop and, presented her passport to the young salesman who looked rather confused as she explained what he should do.

He rang the call centre and after confirming her identity passed the phone to her. And then things just became farcical! Even after a member of staff had confirmed Miss Husky Voice was a women and matched her passport photograph (a rarity on its own) the call centre operative again refused to carry out her change of address as even though she had provided all the credentials asked for they didn't believe she was whom she was 'claiming' to be.

Well, the store assistant seemed as perplexed as she was and said that the Manager was not in the shop today but would ring her tomorrow.

Miss Husky Voice is currently waiting for a reply to all this from Watchdog (A UK TV prog that can loosely be called a consumer help programme).

No, but I have been randomly propositioned because of it. And I was pretty sucessful in the phone sales business for a local computer catologue. LOL

However, I did have someone give me a lot of demeaning down-talking when I called an autoparts store inquiring about an oil filter for my jeep. Apparently a soft voice must mean its impossible for me to be capable AND girly. **eye roll**

Well, looks like some yellow phone company is going to have a serious discrimination suit on their hands if they keep that up. Ugh.
My husband is ginormous like a wrestler and sounds like Mike Tyson - maybe we could get a possee together and storm thier Customer Service headquarters?
