oh talk about laziness. I have submitted only 3 entries this year I think. this fourth one is also from the weekend and I could find a lyric to go with it.. thanks to google and posts on the other thread on this challenge.

Mine was TOTALLY shoehorned. I had no intention of entering a challenge this week, but happened to take a shot I liked over the weekend. The Beatles challenge was just an excuse to enter it. Scoring below average, but a bit better than expected (and with 20 comments).

I was expecting to see yours on front page Shannon with so much scope for creative shot which you are too good at.

My experience is in that way that if you score low or high you get comments. When I Score between 4 and 5 there are very few comments.

UGH! With scores that low I wish I'd get some more comments telling me what's wrong and where I can improve!

06/02/2006 10:39:07 AM · #181
Yes you are right, everything can be happening at the same time, somebody lowering at the same time that another is commenting.
Now I calculated between two latest votes (159 and 160) and it was a "10" :-)

Maybe they bumped your score by two points?
Maybe two people voted at once.
You should wait until the end of the challenge and see what your score is then.
That's the only true statistic.

Seems just strange to me that someone comments like this and gives "2" at the same time.

Edited: adding formula:
Votes * AvgVote - LastVotes * LastAvgVote = LastVote :-)

Thanks, but I was taking a break for a while. This was certainly "my" kind of challenge, and if I had made any effort at all then I might expect a better score. Even so, I had another shot (a candid) taken over the weekend that could have reached the top 10, but I chose personal interest over score this time.

What is a "Shoehorn" ?

A shoehorn is the curved plastic thingie that you use to help your tight shoes go on easier. We use the word in this context to mean we didn't shoot FOR the challenge, instead we took a shot we'd taken during the challenge period for whatever reason and made it fit the challenge - usually via title.

It's a tool like a long spoon to help your heel slip into the back of your shoe when installing... :>)
...but, like me, I suspect some members found an image they liked, then spent almost as much time looking for a lyric to fit, thereby "easing" the entry into meeting the challenge.

...and I'm just slow...

The weirdest thing, though, my image was in the mid fours after one day, and now it's in the mid-fives, which has never happened to me...

hmm... since idnic gave a real answer, i'll just offer up this

though i'm sure it's only going to confuse matters greatly...

edit to add score and stay "on topic" and to confess that i am also a guilty shoehorner...

Thank you all for your answers.
Back to the voting!
Voters voting around this time seem to be much more generous than the voters on the opposite clock!

yesterday (not my submission) it was the same, everything got up around this time but down again 12 hours later.

my score slips further down. Interestingly, all my comments are positive. I'm hoping for an interesting curve this time, instead of just a monumental pile of 5s like I usually get. (a person's gotta hope for something, after all!)

I think 'shoehorn' is exactly what a lot of people did. Somewhere above someone (same post?) also said it was basically a free study...I disagree. It was a very directed challenge. I have researched every lyric and title I was not familiar with. Way too many shots just don't have any reference at all to the title/lyric depicted leaving the title of the shot as the only challenge requirement met. Very disappointed.

I'm not sure what you mean by "shoehorn". I went out shooting and hoping to get something good that would fit with a title/lyric. In fact I was chuffed with one shot and when I got home I found myself singing a lyric that fitted perfectly with it. Subconscious ? Probably but I am sure many people did the same rather than choosing a title and then going out to shoot it.

John wanted to do "...keeps his fire engine clean , it's a clean machine" from "Penny Lane" and went down to the local fire station to capture it. Unfortunately they were really busy and couldn't help until after entries closed so he didn't enter at all - a pity as it was a great idea!

I look forward to Beatles 2 or can we have Elvis, Rolling Stones or Queen??? Or Bob Dylan?

I'm quite happy with that, since it's been awhile since I scored a 6. And a favorite always makes me happy! Let's hope it doesn't drop. Come on tens!

I consider my entry totally shoehorned. I didn't intend to shoot for the challenge. I was out on the long weekend and took some pictures. I liked one and then I searched for lyrics that could go with the picture. I am not a Beatles fan, so I don't know their songs, just heard a few.

and I think it doesn't really matter if you started shooting for a challenge, or found a photo to fit the challenge.

Yes, shooting for a specific topic is a challenge, but finding a title to go with your photograph is another challenge ;)

It's interesting. I Have been busy, with Memorial Day start-of-the-tourist-season here and all, and hadn't gotten around to voting this challenge until yesterday. Having glanced at this thread, I wasn't expecting much, not that this makes any difference to me, since I make up my own mind.

But when I started voting I was like "wow", and I believe this is by far the highest I've scored a challenge in a while now, excepting some free study/best-of challenges. And I found very few entries I thought were seriously demented shoehorns.

My own image is a pretty good shot, and it's hovering in the 6.0 range; that oughta be good for top 100, maybe, IMO, and about where it belongs compared with some of the more thoughtful entries; I took the easy way out.

That's interesting Robert, because I actually thought the opposite!!!
I've only voted on 40%, but my highest score so far has been 7 (although the lowest has only been 5).
Maybe the next 60% will improve?

I hope to be in the 60% and get a 10 ;)

Well my shot is the anti-shoehorn. I put a lot of effort into the idea and taking the shot unfortuantly I screwed it all up and it came out bad. I wasn't going to enter then my single light source came out worse. so i went back and looked at my beatles one and worked on it till it was passable. I am sitting in the low 5s mainly from votes rating me high on my idea or creativity so I can't complain too much. it will bring up my pathetic avg so it was worth it.
06/02/2006 02:54:46 PM · #198
I actually shot for both the single light source and the beatles. I thought i would enter both as a member and entered the beatles photo first, then I realized I couldn't enter both and just left that photo up. People seem to either like it, or be weireded out by it. Somehow...AMAZINGLY..one person actually didn't get it....I really don't know how.

Mine is not a shoehorn, I went out and shot what I had in mind. The picture itself came out bad but after a considerable amount of GIMPing (Photoshopping) it came out quite good.
In my opinion this is my best picture I have submitted but the voters do not agree with me. :-)
This can change, hope so :-)
