I am wanting to get Photoshop finally and get rid of Microsoft Digital Image Suite. I would like to keep the cost below $100 if possible. There are some on eBay and just wanted some advice on which is best...

Photoshop Elements 4.0 - $49.99
Adobe Photoshop Elements 4.0 Plus Premiere Elements 2.0 - $81.00
Adobe Photoshop 5.5 w/ Serial for WIN / MAC Genuine - $33.98
Adobe Photoshop CS2 Full Version - $48.27 (from UK)(is this legit?)
ADOBE PHOTOSHOP 6.0 FULL EDUCATION VERSION NR - $19.99

Any thought?

I can almost guarentee you that CS2 isn't legit. Don't touch that one.

Elements 4.0 is good, basically a stripped down version of CS2. Unless you do video, you shouldn't need the Premier 2.0 along with it.

there is also a Photoshop 7.0 that is CD only that ends in 3 hours and is only $.99 with $7 shipping. It says that it doesnt have box or manual and doesnt qualify for technical support (which i shouldnt need anyways)

go here

I bought a legitimate copy of PS 6 for $106 (or close to that price) on ebay.

Edit to: type what I really meant! I type faster than I think!

No box and no manual probably means also no validation code ...

Which means it's an illegal copy.

can u upgrade from Elements to a better version later?
05/30/2006 05:33:38 PM · #10
The guy I bought mine from has some on ebay now. (PS5 & PS6) Here's the link: Adobe Photoshop 5 & 6

No box or manual with it though ...

Mind you, I called Adobe (the 1800) and asked them when I got this copy with the serial and was told it was legitimate.

Usually ...
Right now, the full version of PS is $649, the upgrade from PSE 4.0 is $499. You'd be better off registering for a class at your local community college and buying an "Educational" version.

Even if the serial number is -- so far -- unregistered, it's not "legal" for them to sell you the program without all its parts, including the manual. They are not allowed to collect the remate (no box/UPC code) and sell it off piecemeal ("psst ... need a PS manual for that bootleg copy you downloaded?").

So...you're telling me it's illegal even though ADOBE told me it's not? I even told the girl I got it off of ebay. That was the reason I called ADOBE...to make sure I wasn't pirating....

Sorry to burst your bubble, but whatever the case might be these are not legit. Because when you buy software (or music, dvds, etc), you do not actually buy it. You buy the rights to use it. And what these people are doing is selling their rights to someone else, which is technically illegal. If anyone follows game news, there was a rumor about reselling used video games. Yes, i know its a rumor, its entirly plausible. I included a link to it if anyone feels like a quick read.

Like I said, it may not be pirated in the sense that it's illegally duplicated or previously-registered, but I think it violates the user agreement in which Adobe specifies the conditions of any re-sale of the software. If Adobe allowed you to register the software in your name, then you haven't really done anything wrong, but I think the seller has.

is Photoshop 5.0 any good? How much more limited is it than Photoshop 6.0 or 7.0?
05/31/2006 12:34:01 PM · #18
If you are a student or if you know one, most universities have stundent pricing on the Adobe Creative Suite 2 (CS2). It retails for $1200, I bought it for $206 at the university. That included Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Acrobat Professional, and more.

Fully legit. Check with the bookstore.

Oh yeah, students come in handy for software discounts ;-)

It's just as "illegal" to use educational software for commercial purposes as it is to purchase someone's "old version". Let's don't strain at a gnat and swallow a camel, here.

EDIT: Possibly even more so. I checked the Adobe site about this stuff, and they DO have a Transfer Form to completely transfer your license for a piece of software. How many of us have ever seen one of THOSE??? :)

GeneralE, wouldn't this be legal, even based on the EULA statements about transferring, since this transfers THOSE too?

Here's a link to Adobe's anti-piracy page

Maybe I should call them again? When I spoke with the girl I didn't get her name but I would definitely get that info if I spoke with someone again. Mainly for a CMA (cover my ass) type of thing.

If you follow Adobe's directions it should all be OK, I guess : )

I still use PS 5.0 for almost all my work. It is plenty powerful enough for 95% of any photo editing you'd want to do. The biggest advantage of the latest versions (CS, CS2) is the improved upsampling algorithm (for enlarging shots), and that can be had in PS Elements for $100.

Buying the Educational version will make you eligible for Full-version upgrades in the future.
