I gave her the benefit of the doubt in my comment, and decided she made a concious decision, having seen her work and followed it, and feeling that it wasn't some kind of "rookie mistake", but that it was a well-thought out decision. I applauded her for being brave enough to submit it even when DPC generally despises such things, and applaud her still.. even if my assumptions are wrong and it was just a mistake of some kind.

I may be a minority here, but the lighter background fits the image.

I often wonder why we never see any "Overrated" threads.

I thought the same thing when I was voting.

Pity about the twenty years difference ... wouldn't mind being his age again. Must be the moustache and untidy hair. Which has since been tidied up, thanks to this picture.

He must be the better looking twin ... he finished one place above me!

In my comment I asked her that very thing, and she confirmed that it wasn't intentional. I know Jen very well; the monitor calibration thing was a joke, which she understood.

I agree that people stepping out of the box is a brave thing on DP - one that is rarely (but occasionally) rewarded with decent scores. Having seen the original from the 30/30 Self Portrait project, I'll disagree that the lighter background works as well, with all due respect to Jen's image and your opinion. The original that i posted in this thread is one of my favourite portraits on all of DP.

I rated this very high in the voting & commented accordingly, but in view of the interesting discussion here, I'd like to explain further. I know bugger-all about the technical aspects of photography (a situation I'm not at all unhappy with). So technical virtuosity doesn't impress me, and nor does a technical shortcoming necessarily repel me. There are ribbon winners every week that are clearly technically excellent but that have, in my view, no artistic merit at all. Of course, I do understand that the stuff I do like is not wildly popular. I'm not unhappy about that, either.

This alternative portrait:

is clearly technically superior to the challenge entry. Even a technical barbarian like me can see that. But what it does not have is the emblematic power of the challenge entry. So I think it is technically superior but artistically inferior. This alternative portrait is merely satisfying, but the challenge entry is demanding, challenging and confrontational. It seizes the viewer by the mental balls (if you can imagine such a thing) and squeezes. I'd prefer that every time. Of course, I'm an artistic masochist.

I agree with Ubique. I can easily overlook editing errors (say in cloning for example ;)) which I know can be corrected. Compositional, emotional, and artistic errors are more difficult to get around. Both of the images are great; I prefer the challenge entry.

i agree with you both in principle. Artistic merit over technical eye candy any day. I just happen to think the original has both :)

But then I would have to stay and fight. ;-) Twas just an observation.

Now I am wondering if Jenesis knows she's such a hot topic in this thread. LOL

I thought this was completely awesome. JPR makes some of the coolest portraits around here...I'm amazed by the fact that this only scored a 5.5

He has a real knack at scoring lower than his pictures deserve. Go figure.

In the fwiw category, I think both of Jen's pictures absolutely kick a$$, no question. There's something about the challenge one I couldn't quite figure - but I think Ubique nailed it. Both knock my socks off, but the challenge entry does it with more force.

Wow, go out to BBQ and come back to this!! Am I in the right place?? :)
First off, let me say a huge thank you to all of you for all the comments, critiques and nice things said about my SP. I have to admit though, I'm a little emabarrased seeing my face plastered all over this thread. LOL!

Pedro was right, it was definetly darker on my monitor. I tried to recalibrate it after a couple of comments about the contrast and I could see what people were talking about. I tried very hard to recreate the 30-day SP (RAW), but when I realized that it just wasn't going to happen I took a different route. I think in hindsight, my original was taken in pitch black with just the flash which gave more depth and sharpness to my features. I dunno... but it sounds good. :)

Anyways, a million Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts. They are all much appreciated. I'm happy with my 6, after I saw the error of my monitors ways.... it was a good score and placement. :)

I forgot to mention Arsenal:

I feel that his selfportrait wasn't one of his best photos, but I like his style a lot. I like it that he's trying something different and really has his own style, like this one for example:
