If the picture was shot in portrait orientation and was uploaded in landscape, I see absolutely nothing wrong with putting it back in portrait as it was originally taken. I don't think people are trying to bend the rules to fit their own interpretation, I think it's just common sense. I understand your lawyer sense though Mav, you're just like my brother, very literal (he's a lawyer too) : )

The problem is the same logic very resonably can be applied to correcting the colours so they look like it was originally seen and captured.

Maybe makes sense to fix the exposure too, as it was originally seen.

Yes this is a literal interpretation of the challenge. But it says 'resize and that's it'

I just wish D & L would make a ruling on this so that we can move on. I don't really care one way or another, just wanted to know. I have sent in the question directly to them, but have yet to receive an answer. I'll post it here when I get it.

In the meantime, I guess we vote as if they're legal and request a DQ.

What clarification do you need? Resize and that's it! Nothing else...where's the confusion? Don't do anything to it but resize once it's made that long trip through the USB tube.

How many camera's allow a ratio that will result in a size other than 640x480? I think I spot a few other shots that weren't real clear about the rule.

It would be 640 on the longest side in that case.

My camera allows for a wider ratio than 640x480. I can select 720x480 ratio. When I make a 10x8 shot, I have to crop some off the sides.

Rotating should've been allowed from the beginning, it was a slight oversight on our part. Please don't request vertical photographs for disqualification. Our apologies for not clarifying this sooner.

Well I see a shot with an off-axis focal plane...interesting...does someone out there have a tilt-shift lens?

.Thanks for the clarification! I thought it would have been silly to exclude all portrait shots. Now we can resume actual photography as opposed to just talking about it.

Well, I guess this will teach me a lesson about following the rules as they are stated... From now on I'll just follow whatever rules I think should've been allowed from the beginning and wait for the rules to change once the voting starts.

And let that be a lesson to you about following rules! You silly literal people! : )
08/21/2003 11:12:04 PM · #42
yeah - as long as I think it should be allowed, it's ok!

I mean this in the nicest way possible:

*thumbs his nose and says "nyah nyah nyah"*

:) I'm just playin'. I'm just excited that I finally was on the winning side of a "dicussion" (i.e. argument) in the forums. A first!

Also, some cameras have an orientation sensor and therefore create a vertical shot directly from the camera.

On one hand I understand the rule this time to not allow rotating because the photographer could use it to fix a slightly tilted picture, but on the other hand not allowing it really limits the shot you can take.

So I decided to not mark down for portrait pictures.

It would have to be 90degs 180degs or 270degs, otherwise it would leave a wonkey border as cropping is not allowed.
