I try to throw out most of the boxes once I have checked the item is working OK although it does make sense to keep them if you move about a lot.

On the other hand KEEP YOUR KID'S TOY BOXES! My son was one of the unusual types who liked to keep the boxes his toys came in. He took great care of them and it has paid off in that he has all his original Star War original packaging as well as the toys and they are now worth a fortune! The down side of this is that he has a minimalist apartment so we have to store them all in our loft space!

I've tossed all but the camera box...

I keep all the good boxes, even if it has nothing to do with keeping the product, just because I always run into the need for boxes... moving, shipping, storing, projects, etc...

and yeah, my bf keeps all of his camera boxes, he's sold a lot of his stuff in the past and everyone always asks if he has the original box.

I think you won the bet, unless your friend claims that you asked a biased bunch of photographers!

I can't help it. I keep all my boxes and my room is just cluttered with them!

I keep the boxes at least until the warranty period is over. After that they become Christmas boxes. Always fun to watch someone open up their gift and get excited thinking it may be something really nice and expensive only to find out it is a pair of socks and a rock.

First of all, never trust anyone in construction...unless they have a 20D! ;)

I keep my boxes if I think I'll be able to resell the item, and if I have the storage space.

Using it to store something else is a good idea. I even move stuff from regular boxes into computer boxes 'cuz they are so strong. Then if I ever do need the box, I can empty it out and reclaim it. Besides, it's always fun to look back ten years later and reminisce about the antiquated piece of technology that came in the box that you now store your junk in.

Otherwise, I break them down flat, put the styrofoam in a trash bag and store them in an attic, basement, closet or under the bed.

I have a family member who saves everything. She had an attic full of boxes of boxes that she couldn't get to and never used (that's eccentric!)

Tell your friend if he doesn't quit calling you names, I'm going to come up there and kick his butt!;)

I keep the camera boxes and toss the rest.

I keep boxes for computer case, monitor, camera bodies, lenses, flash until I dispose of it. Ditto printers if I bought them new or they came with a box. For computer components (I build my own PCs) I keep the boxes until warranty expires or the item is too old to resell, whichever happens later. For everything else, I keep the box if it looks like it would be a good shape/size for mailing (I buy and sell on eBay), otherwise chuck it.

My monitor (CRT) box is big enough for most of the other boxes to live in, so most of the boxes sit in a corner out of the way.

Of course, all the above dates are approximate, I don't have diary entries saying "Chuck out box for X" - that would be anal! :) Hanging on to these sort of boxes is just sensible. Recently I had to take my monitor back for repair under warranty, so it was helpful that I still had the box. If I have to move house or take my computer somewhere, having the box makes transport a lot safer. And, as someone pointed out, having original boxes for camera equipment increases their resale value considerably (safer transport, reassurance for buyer that the gear isn't stolen and is more likely to have been looked after).

I think I have boxes for all my hi-fi components too, stashed in an under-floor cavity area at my parents' place.

I keep all of mine. Still have the original boxes for the parts that I built my first computer from over 10 years ago!

Keep!

For what it is worth, I keep all of the camera related equipment boxes. I have a walk-up attic and they are generally not large, so what the hell. Like others said, resale value and all. that came in handy for a few items I parted with recently on ebay.

For anything big though I tend to chuck 'em after a month or so. I might get burned one day on that move but so far (knock wood) so good.

You should see what I have the frame joiner on...yup, another monitor box reinforced with unused frame parts..

ditto. I just threw away my 3-month old printer box, and converted my external HD and Laptop boxes to storage.

I keep all boxes and original packing until the warranty runs out ... faithfully .. and if it counts .. my hubby does the same!

I keep my boxes but only for certain things, cameras, camera accessories, lenses and computers. The rest I pitch.

I kept the box for my Nikon F3's for almost 15 years until I sold them.

Should you ever have to ship them for service, having the carton makes packing a breeze. (Yes, I have needed to do just that.) It also makes it easier for the service dept to ship it back.

Only keep certain smaller and important ones, like camera, PDA, mobile phones - mainly due to resale value (I change these gadgets often)
The larger ones I always discard (TV, oven, audio system, etc)
And I discard the rest (memory card box, computer, mouse, CDROM...)

Yup, it's anal, but I do the same thing. Just my camera stuff though. Those orange and white boxes are so addicting!

I still have computer boxes from when I used a Commador 64... in fact, there is still a working C-64 IN the box. :D I still have 286 PC mother boards in their original boxes after I upgraded to 386's, which are still there as are the 486 montherboards. I also still have my Ham Radio boxes as well. I also keep camera and other electronic boxes. I keep the paperwork, driver CD's and information in them, which makes it easier to find in case I need it for something. The only time I throw them away is if I need to make room... and then I pick over which to flatten and toss.

I know people that make money from selling original boxes. There is a market for them.

I still have the boxes for my 2 turntables (bought in 1979) and they will remain with me until I get rid of the turntables. I usually base keeping the packing if the item is disposable. If it's cheaper to replace than to repair, I trash the box! In today's market if I were to buy a VCR, the box would be history.

I'm definitely a KEEPER! :D

We keep them! It is so much easier to resell and item if it is in it's original packing. Also, we keep our computer boxes for moving and in case we need to send them in for warranty work.

We kept the boxes for our LCD tvs for moving, but trashed the surround sound box.

So camera & computer stuff, yes...I save them all. Electronics it depends.

Yep, keep all boxes to anything of value. i.e. I throw out the box my toothpaste comes in. :-D heh

Don't forget to tear off the box top from an General Mills-brand cereal (or other products) you may eat and send them in to your local school -- the ones with the "Box Tops for Education" seal are worth 10-15 cents each when the school redeems them -- it often adds up to a reasonable amount.

I just today broke down and discarded the box my (now stolen) camera came in.
