Does an environmental portrait need to have a "person's face" involved ... or just has to include the person in their environment? ... eg. fisherman at work with his back to the camera?

I would consider a portrait to be a picture that is deliberately set up and posed. Does the person need to be looking right into the camera? No. But, I would have the expectation that the person would at least seem to be aware that he/she is being photographed. There's an awful lot of pictures in this challenge where the person doesn't seem to be aware that he/she is being photographed, or was suprised by the photographer. I would consider that a candid as opposed to a portrait.

What I'm struggling with is the animal pictures! Some of them are very good, but I was expecting to see people.

I think it is possible to have candid portraits. I expect a portrait to express something important about the person--something about their nature. Some candid shots do this. Typical candid shots, however, are more about the moment and those I'm not scoring very high.

I also struggled with this. I'll accept portraits of animals that express their individual personalities. There were a few good ones in this challenge. But I don't think bugs have individual personalities to be captured in a photo. I've given more 1's in this challenge than any other. I've also given more 9's and 10's than usual--I'm very impressed by some of the work.

Well, Idnic, there you have it. LOL..Just as I suspected.

Started at a 7 or so

Went to a 6.7, to a 6.4, to a 6.2, to a 6.0, to a 5.9, and now at the very usual 5.8, all in one day, just as predicted. I expect it will go up from here verrrrry slowwwwwwly, and eventually end up at a 6.3-6.4 in the end. I can't imagine it going down further, but I have been wrong on that a couple of times so I will hold that thought open. LOL....

The first day of voting really sucks! LOL....

I am going to be optomistic and assume it is just the first initial voting before bumping up at the end. :) Is that being optomistic or foolish?

By the way, such is life in French I believe is "tel est vie".

It sucks in French is close to "il aspirer". LOL...

I believe that means "that's life" and not "such is life", but there I go picking words apart again! LOL..

Well, at least it's starting to go back up. I was starting to get worried.

Just for the sake of keeping our sanity here, re: translation, anyone see a difference between "That's Life" and "Such is Life"? I sure don't...

Robt "say lavee" Ward....

Rob as an Australian I can say that "Such is life" has been tranformed into our culture to mean "shit happens". This translation has evolved from our famous bushranger Ned Kelly who in 1880 uttered "Such is life" as his last words before being hanged.

I'm not normally a DNMC Nazi, but voting on this challenge is driving me nuts. I'm sorry, but pics of flowers/animals etc might be 'environmental' but they are not 'portraits'. I also think there's a fairly clear difference between candids and portraits as well, altho I'll conceed that you can't always judge which is which without the benefit of knowing how the pic was captured. Am I the only person who feels this way about this challenge?

Q.

Right now, Rose is at her predicted 5.8 dropping point. I expect it to go up from here, again, as predicted. I may get a 6.3 or 6.4 in the end, and that is my story and I am sticking to it! LOL....

However, it looks like your score may just beat us two, DrArchoo!! :)

Robt "say lavee" Ward....

That is correct Bear. There is really no difference in the meaning of each saying, but only in how each would actually be spelled in French :)

I have about 6.5 now. It's my best score I've ever got but I hope I rise a little bit.

Thank you so far everyone. I never have a clue how my pictures will do, this one I thought high 5's, maybe low 6's....to say the least I am happy with the score so far.

I haven't heard Cindi's score at all, so I'm fully planning on seeing her on the ribbon page.

My score dropped overnight to a spot much closer to my original prediction. We'll see if it recovers.

I don't know. Cindi was quite a bit miffed last time she posted. Hard to say. Maybe she is off shooting for the next challenge? That is what I'm doing in a few minutes! LOL...

I'm not happy with my still life, and will probably pull it. So I have to take another. I also have to do HEAT and have a new toy to play with for both shots. I guess that is how I will spend my day.

Best to you DrArchoo! I will keep you posted. My score just went up a bit. It is probably on that upward smooooooze I mentioned earlier, but not sure it will top some of the great scores being posted today!! :)

Lotta angry voters out there and I'm sure those suffering from the DNMC's aren't too thrilled with this one either...
