I had the pleasure yesterday of taking photos of one of the most amazing musicians on the planet, Arve Henriksen.
Let me know what you think of the photos...

Leeds Parish Church, lit specially for the occasion.

I really like these! #2 and 3 are awsome with the colors. I think I like the horizontal composition a little better since the ceiling in #3 isn't very interesting. SC might get on you about posting outtakes during the challenge though.

Seeing as he's talking about missing the challenge and the photos were taken yesterday, I don't think that'd be a problem ;)

Minority opininon, perhaps...

I don't like the colors, especially 2 and 3, I think the yellow is way oversaturated. Number 1 is great, and if you post process the others to tone down the color in the light just a bit you'd have a winner.

The way I see it, the yellowness of the light becomes a focal point, instead of the musician, his beautiful surroundings, etc. For number 2 I would also consider cropping out the two windows on either side, since they are almost entirely in shadow. There's enough detail in the windows behind him for this photo. That will also increase the size of the central part of the scene... I think you're loosing a lot of detail in the church bits behind him, due to the inclusion of the sides.

Just my free advice, its worth what you paid for it.

Yes. But the problem with "outtakes", as others have stated, is that posting outtakes could influence how people vote on the current "Holy Places' challenge. I mean "WOW", after seeing these photos, everything else in the challenge looks like...may have to change my votes after seeing this perspective on the challenge.

Personally, it's fine with me - but if this kind of thread is allowed, why not allow "outtakes"? Sounds like a double-standard to me.

As long as the forum rule is in place to not allow outtake threads the subject never ended. ;^)

Lovely setting, lovely stained glass, interesting musician. But for the most bang, you would have to separate him from the wire, cords, and other electronic junk lying around (for my 0.2c).

Thanks, some helpful comments there.

About the whole outtakes issue... I didn't even enter the damn challenge and there seems to be a lot of confusion about it. I voted to allow them during challenges anyway, and this thread has done little to change my mind. It is actually extremely helpful to have advice so soon after I've taken them, it'll help me shoot the rest of the festival this week and I can tweak some of them before I send the photos to the artists and my agency.

I really wish you would stop complaining so much. Then maybe this place would be better!

I consider an "outake" to be an image you shot during a challenge time period and shot with intent of entering. All others pictures are just that ... the images we capture 24/7 all year for the rest of our lives. This post is just like any other asking for advice. The only misleading issue is the title of your thread, using the "holy places" when it was a coincidence that you photographed in a church recently.

I liked the third picture, at first all of the color was overwhelming but on second look it was amazing. And I like the first one, the tight crop with the wonderful DOF stained glass blur.

Thanks. The compliment is most graciously accepted. ;^)

Thanks again for the comments, I have to add though that if it hadn't been for the recent 'Holy' challenge, I wouldn't have posted the photos here. It's because that topic is on people's minds that I thought it would be beneficial to get some advice.
