So, I'm moving to NY for a new job next month (in Union Square), and our apartment hunt has not been going well. Today, we looked at a few places in Roosevelt Island. They were very nice for about half the cost of Manhattan. The subway (about a 6 minute walk) goes right into Manhattan, however there seems to be basically nothing on the island except a supermarket. I know there's a number of people on here from NY, and since this is the only forum that I've ever participated in, I thought it'd be a good place to ask...

Does anybody know about Roosevelt Island? Is it not worth it? Is it nice? Any info would be VERY greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much!!!

Just reading the results of a quick google it seems like it should be renamed "DramaStorm Island".

Seems like a nice place other than all the fighting and corruption type issues these last 20 years or so...

Kind of wonder why its not more expensive myself now...?

Well people got stuck all night on the tram a couple of weeks ago (not a joke...) I think also there used to be a prison there...I think I went there once to photograph...could you check it out first?

There's nothing there. It's dead... IMHO you'd be better off another few subway stops away in Astoria, Queens. Nice neighborhood, good restaurants, easy trip into Manhattan. Also look in the Brooklyn neighborhoods of Brooklyn Heights, Park Slope, Carroll Gardens, and Williamsburg. PM if you want to discuss offline.

Thanks for the opinions...especially to misterjosh! Seemed like a nice little place when I checked it out, but I was also worried that it would be just dead there.
Any other opinions would still be greatly appreciated, but I'll consider some other neighborhoods (such as Brooklyn) before Roosevelt.

Thanks again!!!!
