Is it just me, or should a movie's debut poster probably have some space on it for putting text on't?

There's lots of cracking photos (not to mention a few STUNNING portraits) but very few have allowed space to advertise the film!

Well the challenge states to take the photo for the poster for the film... IMO this means not having to leave spaces etc.

Holding at 4.95, occasionally varying by 1/100 of a point. I am frankly sick to death of watching my entry tank, can't wait for this to be over. I'm just dying for Still Life and Self-Portrait to get started since I think my entries for both of those absolutely surpass anything I've entered to date and I'm dying to know what people think of them.

the jist of the biscuit is to read ahead as to what folks will vote highly BEFORE you shoot your photo. in doing so you will likely eliminate the need to argue about silly nuances related to how folks are voting.

i've entered many a photo pushing the limits of the challenge topic, or photographing something on topic but off beat. they generally score poorly, but i know ahead of time that is likely. this challenge is an exception, as i am doing quite well...

That's another reason why I'm just tired of looking at this challenge. It's seemed a bit more contentious than others have been lately, and I'd like to just move on already.

you just need to TRY to please everyone !

here's what i did.

i thought about how a poster is laid out. i thought about how much text is on a typical poster. considering both large font and small font. i framed the photo to allow space for both the movie title and the smaller font text. simple enough.

if you didn't think ahead, it's likely the strict voters will toss out a lower score than if you had. i don't understand all the childish b*llsh^t around here sometimes...

Yeah, I did that and it's tanking anyway and everyone is fighting over how to vote... CHECK PLEASE! Blah. SP sounds like it's going to be a lot more lighthearted.
05/14/2006 08:31:25 PM · #14
they all should be light hearted is my point i guess...

i don't have time to worry about silly things like if a self potrait is really a self portrait. or if a macro is really a macro. or if a wildlife shot is really from the wild. or if a night shot was actually taken at night. or if a negative image is really a negative...

good luck in the future ;}

I agree with Soup. I did exactly what I thought this challenge should be and needed to be. I'm tanking with the rest of you.

Every challenge is a crap shoot. This one is no different. I have gotten past it big time and my excitement is already on to the next challenge rollover (tonight). I am really not even updating my score anymore for DPC Cinema. As they say in my native neck of the woods "forgetta bout it"! :)

Well, for all the complaining, I just looked at the results and it seems to me people voted for good pictures and pretty much ignored whether they could be movies. I disagree with that strategy, but c'est la vie.

I wholeheartedly agree.

I wasn't all that thrilled with Del Primo Christ. It's a good shot, but I am not all that thrilled with the title or any story there. Religious bound shots don't really appeal to me.

The second place is ok. I did like the shot a lot, but really didn't like the title.

Third place was one of my higher voted shots. Not too thrilled with the title, but did love the shot. "Could" be a movie with a lot of imagination.

My actual favorite, and totally underrated photo, in my opinion, was the one with the fish and bone. I have to see who took that one again though, so I can give them kudos in comments :)

Underrated DPC Cinema entries:

This would have been my top four, in this order:

To me these top three had great titles and compositions and definately had a drawing appeal to any cinema seat. KUDOS to each photographer, and I left you comments.

I just thought I would throw in a fourth because I love that shot. Very beautiful!

GO to the movies? I was a manager for major 14-screen cinema complexes for nearly 8 years - namely "Showcase Cinema" during that time in the Northeast. Not to mention even a few 2 screen theaters, both for artistic films as well as the childrens's classics, 50's classics, and all the new and contempories. I ordered posters, I collected posters, I mounted posters. I think I know my stuff, thanks :-)
