| my take is that it is a portrait taken in a "natural" enviroment as opposed to a studio -- for example, a cowboy with his horse. or something like that. |

I think it means take a portrait of someone in their "environment."
Park Ranger in the park, Doctor in the ER, chef in the kitchen. Stuff like that. |

Okay Rikki, I know the answer to this one! I just did some stuff for the University that was similar, and my mentor was on my case about this.
Say we've got to take the portrait of a pilot. Instead of putting him in front of a backdrop, or at his desk, or something equally mundane, what do we do?
We put him on the steps to his airplane, or in the cockpit, or standing next to it on the ramp. Why? Because that's the environment that he operates in. Just looking at the portrait, we know the story. "Hey, it's a guy with an airplane, he must be a pilot" vs. "Hey, it's a guy at the desk...so what?"
Make sense now?

An environmental portrait is something like you see in "People" magazine - where a person is photographed in a setting that tells a little bit about them. A doctor in an operating room, a teddy bear manufacturer on a pile of teddy bears, Bill Gates standing on top of the world... :)

I've done a lot of these in my career. Most of what I do is on-site photography. So, I'm siked about the idea as a challenge.

seriously, it doesn't necessarily have to be a person. It could be an onject, like a hammer in a drawer full of tools.

partially correct - more accurately, I would personally say, it's more about how the environment and the subject co-exist to tell a story to the viewer? |

My prediction:
115 cowboy shots
25 Icelandic fishermen (also happen to be the top 25 photos in the challenge)
54 flowers (many rating highly despite not meeting challenge)
43 babies/children (see above ^)
