First, a disclaimer: I will be less irritated in the morning, but right now I'm completely incredulous and you get to hear about it.

Why do abstracts not qualify as good images? I had one commenter who complained that s/he couldn't tell what it was, another who informed me that it was "too abstract" and that was "not the point of the challenge".

Huh? What part of the challenge description excluded abstracts? Where did it spell out that the image must look like anything you could identify? The only qualifier was that it must "work well", compositionally I think this absolutely met that criteria. Who gives a flip if you can identify its components??

Why can't an image merely be pretty or cool? Our ancestors invented the constellations and made up stories that endured into modern times. Kids find ducks and sailboats and space shuttles in the clouds while laying on their backs. I look at my entry and I see a comet streaking across a dark planet, its tail trailing below it. Constellations are nothing but a random scattering of commonplace stars. Cloud formations are still just clouds. The truth is much less interesting than the fantasy. Why must a photo (for this challenge) be a literal depiction? Where did the collective human imagination go?

I would LOVE for someone to explain that to me, because seriously, while a very very few photos deserve their placement, most of the voting on this challenge appears to me to be a joke. A very boring, sub-par joke.

Go to town, kids. Rip me up. :-P

I hear ya....i experienced some frustration in relation to my score as well.

I know it sucks. I have a new phrase for the types of photos that get praised over and over again by the voters, they are called "bimbo shots". :P

ETA: I'm not referring to photos with women in it so please no hate mail! :)

I understand your frustration, but calling the placement of other people's images a sub-par joke is a little on the spicy side. These are shots that other people care 'bout. :)

Anyway, a few comments on your submission.
First off, I really like the composition. The saucer creates a very pleasing line and divides the frame in a very graceful way. The star anise is placed well and is nicely juxtaposed to the minimalism of the rest of the frame. When I think about improving this image from my own perspective, the first thing that strikes me is this lack of detail in the 'highlights'. Of course they represent dark areas in the original photo, but nevertheless they read as blown out highlights. I would also like to see the blacks closer to true black. If you were to do a large format print of this, the tonal depth would probably disappoint. Last observation would be the rice. I like the haunting glow and interesting texture, but feel like the idea is swallowed up a bit. I not sure how I would change that element. In summary, your original image is well conceived and perfectly balanced compositionally. Keep up the good work.

That's because those that liked it were too busy inverting it in photoshop and then "forgot" to vote. :P

mine was sort of abstract and although I did received comments regarding what it was such as "it took me a while to figure out what it was" or "i guess its -----" overall i wasnt told i was voted down for it being abstract but then again mine had abstract in the title so i guess they figured i knew. lol. I did have higher hopes for it but it did still score a bit higher than yours. im not sure if i lost any votes due to its abstract nature.

Hmmmm...

Rebecca- as people get older, imagination is the first thing to go. However, despite the comments, I don't think the abstract part had much to do with your score in this case. The subject and composition were fine. I suspect you got hit for a too-dark original that resulted in weak grays and blown out highlights in the negative, and the soft focus on the anise.

FWIW, i left you a comment.

Eh. Whatever, I'm over it. Rikki, I appreciate the critique.

I actually tend to vote higher for abstraction, but most DPC voters will vote lower. I have an unusual brain. That is my cross to bear, but it was a pleasure exchanging glances with you on my trip to Golgotha.

They didn't like my sexy corset back either.

For my next entry I'll make sure take something that would look good in a hotel lobby.

You got over a 5.5. That's not bad.

They didn't? I don't see any unwarrented negative comments, and that's a not a terrible score for your first challenge.

My entry was contested, probably because it doesn't look like a pure negative but perhaps selective negation. I negated the luminance channel in LAB space to leave the colors unchanged.

For a change, I don't feel I was overall penalized for my outside-the-box approach.

Oh no, I don't mean to sound ungrateful; I think I did really quite well for a first attempt. I simply meant in contrast to many of the things that scored much higher that puzzled me. And no, all the comments I got were quite appropriate.

I should have put in some smilies and winks.

The thing I find curious (and as such interesting and even delightful) is the interplay between the technical and taste.

I was coffee challenged when I posted that, sorry.

I didn't enter "Negitive", but played around with some of my own images and get these two for you to let me know what you think please..... I will give a comment for comment.

and this one

There are more examples in my portfolio.....

I actually had no idea about the results of this one. I was so surprised to see the results of the challenge, and now have quite a few as "my favorites" as well
