my cam is about a year old, has never had anything cleaned except the lenses and the mirrors inside. Lately I have noticed my cam is having a hard time focusing. Sometimes the pics come out not focused at all. How can I clean my cam to get those nice crisp photots again?

I doubt that cleaning will restore the focusing performance. It sounds like there may be a problem with the camera. If it's still within a year, Call Nikon and discuss the symptoms with them. It may need repair. Even if it's a bit over a year, they may cover it under warranty.

it hasn't been droped or anything. everything else on the cam is fine. I think it is a sensor prob. I also get little clear dots on my pics which I know is a sign it needs cleaned I just want o know how to do it properly..
It tuned a year old in Feb., so I hope there is nothing wrong with it

Here's a link to the copperhill cleaning method. it's the one I've used successfully for several years.
After a year plus, I'm sure you do have plenty of dust on the sensor, but the main sensor has nothing at all to do with focusing. If the camera has trouble focusing, or fails to focus, there is another cause. Here are a few questions:
- Does it have problems focusing with both of your lenses?
- Does it have problems just in certain conditions or all the time?
- When it misfocuses, is there *anything* in focus, or does it miss completely?
- When it misfocuses, can you tell if it's always behind or in front of the intended subject?
- Have you tried resetting to factory defaults, or making sure that the settings for focus mode or active AF points have not accidentally been changed?
