Next time there is a complimentary color challenge, flower shots shouldn't be allowed, much like the macro challenges. I just got so sick of seeing flower shots I could barely take time to appreciate the few that were very well done.

I read the comment and said to myself...10 bucks to a donut this was made by a young person...and I was right.

I can assure you that as you age, you will develop a greater appreciation of all things in life and will not be so quick to dismiss things of this nature.

I for one don't particularly care for "Grunge", but I do take the time to look at the materials being displayed, with a view of learning from them.

If everyone is so bored of flowers, skip them. You'll still make your 20% voting requirement.

I agree that seeing the same thing over and over can be boring. The key is to be able to spot something different in each one, be it lighting, composition, point of view, DOF etc.

Also, give yourself a challenge. The next time you go out shooting, shoot flowers, not just for documentary purposes. Find a way to represent a flower that is interesting. Try and explore shape, pattern, texture, colour. In other words, try and find something unique that will hold a viewers interest.

Just another opinion.

Well put, cpanaioti ...

I'm not one to complain. But I'm getting old fast and I'd like to see fewer: windmills, umbrellas, flowers and waterfalls. However, a nice POV and lighting is always appreciated. .... Well perhaps I am one to complain :) PS: 2 of my best scoring images had umbrella props ... If only I had a windmill in there I might have ribboned :)

Best advice I have seen yet.

Although there were quite a few mediocre flower shots in the challenge, there were also a number of extremely good ones. I voted them all, and I'm glad I did. Had I not, I'd have missed many of the well-exectued, well though-out shots.

See #27 for how I feel about this. ;)

Ok for me there are to many flowers here, but i just had to try the dpc style and take photos of flowers. I see now why all the flower because this is my best scoreing entery :) But i am a bit scared that when my entery is late in the randoming sistem i will nott get the right scoreing because people are tierd of the flowers.. do you all know what i mean?

I wouldn't really sweat it. No matter what the challenge theme is there is going to be some redundancy in subject choices. I think greatandsmall covered the list well in her linked rule #27. ;^)

At least flowers are better than chain link fences. ;)

ditto. the flower pic is played and played and played... no many interesting angles or flowers, just the same ole stuff.

But here's the thing... I'm quite certain the shots of different people are taking instead fo the smae handful of fotogs just taking pix of flowers.

Fritz... well thank you for saying such nice things that about my entry. I didn't think you'd spot mine, but obviously you did. LOL!!!

Thank God I did not shoot a flower ;-)

I'm not sorry I enter a flower picture.

To me there is an incredible variety of possibilities with flora photography, much as there is with sunsets.

I've taken many thousands of digital flower pictures. I like floral imagery. I'm never bored by it. After reviewing my 86 DPC submissions my floral shot in the Complimentary Colors challenge is only my 4th. Thought sure I'd submitted more. This one I did as an example during a Photoshop workshop I taught. In the class I demonstrated everything from shutter to web output using that image. It was picked by the students and, by chance, it happened to include complimentary colors so I didn't have to do any special preparation for DPC submission. :)

Hate flower pictures if you like. I only see the infinite variety of nature in all its glory.

That is why flowers can be so wonderful. There are so many curves and shapes and colors. I don't do many flora shots with petals, but I do take a lot of leaves, ferns and natures dried flowers. Nothing like a really nice dried goldenrod with just the right light to get all the wonderful peaks and valleys in the flower head. I love shooting flowers after the frost because they have a unique beauty.

Don't get me wrong that I don't like flower shots. I've seen and greatly appreciate a very well done floral photograph. The point of not allowing flowers in such a competition would be to encourage creativity and thinking outside the box. I couldn't help but do a quick count of the number of flowers in the complementary colors competition, I counted roughly 102 flower shots, and this did include a couple that were just plants not flowers but still. Thats about a third of the entire competition. Why not just have a flower competition.

Please don't think that because I'm young I don't have a greater appreciation of certain things. I have a few flower shots in the top of my ratings but they were the minority. I love a close up look at the miraculous wonders that are all around us that only a few lucky ones(like many here on dpc) are able to see, and even more importantly, capture well in a photograph. That is what my pursuit in photography strives after, of course, it dosen't always work as well as planned. There was just too much repeptiveness(is that a word) in the challenge and I couldn't help but let people know and maybe take into consideration not allowing them(like the macro challenge) the next time complementary colors is a category. Hope I didn't offend anyone but this just how I feel.

There was a thread a while back that was much like this one. It was argued (by me, for one) that you can't force creativity like that. Just because flower shots don't inspire you, doesn't mean that they don't inspire others. If not for my interest in flower shots, I may not have learned many of the things I know about photography.

I agree, time to get rid of flowers and bugs and water and kittens and dogs and kids and babies and LANDSCAPES...

Hell, I vote that if a picture has ever been shot of it before, it shouldn't be allowed in challenges. Soon, we can just end all this silly photography and voting.
