A friend of mine is looking for a wedding photographer for July 15th in the Portland, OR area. His main concern is that they (he and wife to be) own the copyright/negatives/original files. The company/person can still use the pictures in marketing materials and even resell prints to wedding guests, but they want the originals to do with as we please.

Do you know anyone that would be interested in this?

Sure.
I'll do it.
$1500 and transport back and forth, and hotel accomodations.
Is that a good deal or not? all depends...

Why not do it yourself. Great practice and you can start building a portfolio.

$1500 is even cheap for giving away the copyright to every single shot you take...You're probably not going to find a quality photographer to do this for under like 5 grand...at least.

Pay my air travel and accomodation and I'll do the wedding for free! ;)

They can probably find some sucker who will do it for $500.

They may get crap, but at least it'll be their crap.

I will do it for free if I get first free transport to the place and hotel accomidation plus food :) I love traveling :)
But I guess it would be cheaper just to hire someone from that area :)

Good luck in getting most ppa members to do that.
Heck I wouldn't for less than 5G

Thanks for the offers...

Prof_Fate - I'll pass your offer and pricing onto him
Makka/Birgir - I don't know that flying you guys in would be cost effective :)
Rex - I'm not nearly good enough for weddings yet :)
Deapee - He knows that this is not industry standard and is willing pay for the request.
Skiprow - I think that's a little more than he's looking to spend, but good to know you're available.

Spazmo - Go find someone that will hug you.

Do you have a link to a website/or some contact information I could pass on to him? And just so you know, there will not be cheese involved in the wedding... :)

I don't know those details. I know that this is good information to have, but I just don't have it. I'm going to assume standard wedding (church/hall kinda stuff)

I'm really just trying to gather some contact info of photographers that would be willing to relinquish rights and that has posed to be quite a challenge.

I may be interested as well. If you would like to know more info, PM me. I would just need airfare... my friend is moving out there about that time, so I would have a place to stay.

You can check out my work (not my prices for this) on my website. :)

21st century dude.
Brides want it. you don't give it to them, i will.

Once you get the paid to shoot and PP (create the images) the only money left is in the prints/album. About a week after they get those you get no more money. Why not give them the files too?

And to whom do the images have value? The people in them. And who said I'm giving away the copyright? I'm not - just the right for them to get prints and share in a non-commercial way. No need to be greedy.

What are you willing to go and shoot for, $ per hour wise? You do it for free now...so $10? $40? $80? How about PP work in PS? $10? $30? I can hire someone to do it for under $15...SO lets say you get $75/hr to shoot and $25/hr to PP...not bad money really, to do what you like. For an 8 hour wedding, 3 hours basic PP to get proofs...$675. Lets throw in 10 hours in PS to make some nice images too...Total $925. How about a 30 page Asuka book or ArtLeather iMount Deluxe? To just fill them with images takes 15 minutes...to get fancier takes 2 hours, to do custome designs on all the pages maybe 15 hours. The album itself is $150 max. Do the math. $5000 is a bit much for wedding photography unless the photog is a name person or has some special style IMO.

Event shooting (that is what a wedding is, an event or perhaps a sporting event) can be had pretty cheaply - no sitting fee, $10 an 8x10 around here, and the events I have shot for organizations - they just want the images on disk, no prints. So a wedding is a few hours longer, and probably a bit more artistic ability is required. Give me $500 and I'll give you the images on disk, no problem. I have to work a lot more and pay for the album and might not make as much profit on it, so pics on disk actually makes me more money.

Yeah, most of the photographers here in Orlando provide CDs of all of the images. I do too, but I also have a very easy, and affordable, way for them to order prints online. Also, I do not give them TIFF or RAW files; JPEG is all they get. I charge an extra $1000.00 my layered TIFF files, and never allow my RAW files to be released--that's borderline ownership if they have them. JPEG will give them mediocre quality prints, but once they see the quality that I give them from the TIFF files, they are usually wow'ed enough to just get the prints through me and use the JPEG files for the internet and email.

NEVER assume a 'standard wedding'! NO two are ever alike. Of my next 2 - no garter, no bouquet toss. On one, the WHOLE 'audience' will get up in the front of the church and sing the congregration's 'song'. And they have 3 ministers officiating. Not standard IMO. Should be interesting though. Oh, yeah, in addition to a soloist, they have 2 folks gonna dance on teh altar. Yep. That's what they told me. And no cake.

My July 1 wedding is medeivel themed...chainmail, armor...again, no bouquet, no garter. Theatre folks...marriage will be in a theatre, on stage. Standard, yeah, right. LOL

Dude! Those weddings sound fun! lol I'm stuck with the more traditional ones on this side... Well, other than the 150-family member group portrait that I have to do outside in July... No sweat, right? lol
