I found this guy flying around while taking pictures in my mother's flower garden. It is about 2" long, and flies around like a humming bird sipping the pollen from the flowers. You had to move fast to snap the picture as he only spent about 1-2 seconds at each flower. I think he's a bug (because of the six legs) but have no idea what he is.

Can anybody tell me what he is?

I saw one of these in another thread on DPC a while ago. I think it's a Hummingbird Moth :)

Scratch that, some Sphingidae (Hawk Mosths) can also have clear areas on the wing, so it could be one or those. In fact, the pattern of clear areas suggests its more likly to be a Hawk Moth, but not the Hummingbird Hawk Moth

//www.leps.it/SpeciesPages/MacroStellat.htm - Its not this.
//www.leps.it/SpeciesPages/HemarFucif.htm - Looks like a close match, but its a European Species, although the link on the page says Holartic.

This is probably it. The flight pattern looks exactly like the one I saw. Look at the video, you'll see it was quite a challenge to get it's picture. It has a very eratic flight.

Thanks for all your inputs.

Jacko, now that you mention it. it really does look like a flying shrimp. LOL. Probably not as tasty though.

Prepared as tempura it probably tastes a bit like that too. Definitely high-protein.
