abandoned and wasteland is right on... i think alot of people dont know that... now you can interpret that as lonely and isolated, and i think some people are tghinking thats the true defintiton... so when they see my picture that is somewhat of a landscape, they think "give it a 1"... my score is like 5 right now, and it seems like people are either getting it and loving it, or not getting it and giving a really low score...

I'm definitely worried about that - both based on my score (dropping into the low 4s) and a lot of the entries. I've only voted on about 50 so far, but I've only seen a few, maybe half a dozen, that really say "desolation" to me. But maybe this is going to be one of those where everyone's interpretation of the topic is going to be different. I'm loosening my normal "fits the challenge" boundries, but I'm having a hard time deciding where to draw the line....

Titles help convey what the image means regarding the context of the photo in many situations. Sometimes the "obvious" doesn't jump out at you but then hits you over the head like a ton o' bricks...

It's why I posted this:
A quick reminder of the meaning of the word 'Desolate':
1. a) Devoid of inhabitants; deserted: “streets which were usually so thronged now grown desolate” (Daniel Defoe).
b) Barren; lifeless: (eg, the rocky, desolate surface of the moon.)
2. Rendered unfit for habitation or use: the desolate cities of war-torn Europe.
3. Dreary; dismal.
4. Bereft of friends or hope; sad and forlorn. See Synonyms at sad.

... and of 'Desolation':
1. The act or an instance of desolating.
2. The state of being desolate.
3. Devastation; ruin: a drought that brought desolation to the region.
4. a) The state of being abandoned or forsaken; loneliness: a sense of utter desolation following the death of his parents.
b) Wretchedness; misery.

[BTW, these threads get repeated Scott - thus my own title repetition thing! I do remember your comments.]

Jon, point taken but I still don't think that blaming your title for a poor showing here is right. Most of your comments were positive. And I don't think that blaming the North Americans is right either. The bottom line is to the greater majority didn't think your image conveyed a feeling of a garden, your image was not strong enough for THAT challenge. Either way, if you take a different approach you have to live and die by what you produce.
Calling your shot 'Clothes Pegs on A Washing Line In My Garden' will maybe give you one or two extra votes perhaps, but it all comes down to the strength of the image in the end.
Look at past winners, obviously not too many of those relied on their title.

Where the hell did that come from?! I never mentioned anything about dissappointing scores.

I think you may be reading too much into a simple comment about title relevance and cross-boundary confusion. Granted, misinterpretation could hinder scoring well, but I never expected much from my garden entry. I wanted to submit something to contrast the undoubted flood of 'green' entries (see my own comments on the image).

BTW, I think my image WAS strong but not universally appealing - which does not bother me in this instance.

Anyway, I also think a title can point me to some subtlty that I would have not seen before.

ok! Sorry, I went a bit in the "rant mode" there, guess I am still mad at the doesn't meet the challenge brigade

In spite of all the definitions that have been posted desolation is to a very great degree a matter of perception. Titles do give some clues as to the photographers perception any may give me a new point of view.

i got a comment...she's asking me if my submission is VALID?, of course if you asked me...Yes, absolutely valid. I saw all the definations of desolation here that are posted by the members...I created an image based on it. just rate the image...high or low...im just happy with my submission. Regarding the photo titles, yup..some voters lead them to understand the image and earned it with additional points.

i'm finding this one hard to rate. the title tells me the idea they have, but the images don't give me the feeling of desolation. i've come across several beautifully shot images, but they don't feel desolate to me at all.

Interesting discussion here. Possibly something I have a problem with. Usually, I submit a photo that doesn't quite directly hit the average non-thinking viewers in terms of relevance to the topic immediately, but it is pretty clear to me. At times, I have tried to convey the idea in my title, while at other times I have titled the photograph what I really wanted to title it. I've found that the title really makes no difference! You have to beat them over the head with it! On the other hand, perhaps if I had retitles my inside looking out differently I would at least be getting a 5 on an image that I think would definetely get 6+ in a challenge that people could easily see the relevance to. To me it's clear cause I was there and there are other deeper meanings at work as well that I tried to hint at in the title. Oh well, just another fun week at DPC! No worries.
