I am about to buy either the D50 or 70 Nikon body and would appreciate suggestions on a lense. (will be getting only one) My shooting will primarily be people and still lifes. (not close up or landscape) Has anyone done comparisions? Thoughts? Favorite places to buy? thanks......

A good choice for both cameras would be the 18-200mm. Just a good all around lens and the wide range in focal lengths will give you versatility.

If you are only getting one most think this is the cats meow 18-200 VR

but the kit lens that comes with the D70s (18-70) is a very nice lens and I think that would be a great starting point. I have seen the D70s kit for around $1000.00 US.

There is one lens that is a must have and it is the 50mm 1.8 its about $100.00 and with the crop factor of the sensor becomes a 75mm. Most Canon and Nikon shooters will tell you to add that piece of glass to your list.

Good Luck

Just a quick note that I STRONGLY recommend that you do as much research as possible in this area of photography.

I too was about to go Nikon until I checked the prices on the lenses I wanted.

Wow.

In my first lens purchase, I saved almost 600 dollars US.

I was going to buy a 20D. That money theoretically paid for my to 'upgrade' to the 30D and it paid for my backpack.

If I had gone with the 350XT, the savings in one lens would have paid for the camera.

Check both new and used prices. Being in America, you should have at least a few options open to you in the used market.

I personally prefer shopping brick and mortar stores as opposed to Ebay.

I'm not saying to buy Canon, just choose the lenses you want BEFORE you buy the camera.

You might even find it VERY wise to check out the Sony releases this coming summer (ie wait on your purchase) as they will be updating the Maxxum Digital line. A few cheap but decent lenses will cover your bases there and if I recall correctly, Sony makes the sensors for the D50, possibly the D70 as well.

It's just that you will be able to get Anti-shake on the camera, freeing up your lens choices a LOT and being equally good to your pocket book.

I have heard some rumors kicking about that this summer might be a fairly eventful one for non-canon cameras.

I just got the 18-200 mm vr off of ebay for $885. I will be selling my 18-70mm lens and my 70-200mm 4.0-5.6 lens in a day or two. If you like, you can save money and just buy the body of the d50 or d70 and pick up the lens from me before I put on ebay.

Just a suggestion...not a "hard sell".

Good luck.

I bought a 50mm 1.4 a while ago and I love it. Nikon glass is said to be better than Canon. I have the kitlens and a Sigma 28-300. I use the Sigma and the 50mm much more than the kit-lens. I would advice you to really look around and compare prices. Many pro's say that the most important investment in photography is glass, and then the body. See if you can get a good offer on something better than the kit-lens. Simply ask the sellers if you can get a better offer than they are making. They might even say yes. I have made good bargains that way.
Happy buying, Nikon will not let you down.
