I just finished voting on the complementary colors challenge and thought the large majority of entries, in my opinion, were lackluster and uninspired. Sure there is a technical ability displayed in many entries, but where is the photographer's own unique idea and vision? The flower shots became so repetititve that I don't know how I finished the vote. Am I the only one that feels this way? Where is the creativity and personal expression?

When approaching a challenge, please ask yourself, are you putting part of yourself into the image? Are you just copying an idea you've already seen? Are you spending some time developing an idea, or using the first thing that comes to mind? If you answered yes to these questions, I beg you, for your own personal growth, and the interest of the voters, show us what makes you an individual.

He said "show what makes you an individual", not "show us your backside"! ;-D

Whenever I show my kind of photography I never fare well here. I guess my personal growth is stumped :)

Maybe this is who we are and we're just boring.
04/26/2006 12:45:10 PM · #6
I would have to agree with the boring part. I have tired of seeing highly photoshopped pictures that obviously weren't that great beforehand. Just my preference...anyone know of a site where the photoshopping isn't so severe? And yes, I know about basic editing.

Well atleast you stayed around through 2 challenges....

I'm just blaming all the flower shots on the rather severe winter many have been through and are enjoying seeing spring arrive.

There's a lot of repetition, but if you (maybe) stop at each photo to appreciate it, it does kinda break up the monotomy a bit.

I agree Kiwiness, my favorite shots never do well either. Here's an example of one of my favorite shots that was a unique concept, was executed pretty well, but did badly in the end. I think the subject matter probably scared some people. I did end up getting a favorite and some great commentary though.

My advice is not intended to get you a higher score. It's more about a taking a chance and celebrating your individuality. In my opinion, if the photographers here start taking the chance, eventually the voters will come around and show their appreciation.

Well mine is certainly different. And I have a 4.9 to show for it so far! So at DPC formula is more important than ART.

Still, my alternates were middle of the road anyway, so I thought that if I was going to burn, might as well burn all the way ;)

I tried to be creative and my score tanked. I know it is not the best picture quality but I thought my humor would win some votes. I was way wrong. For those of you that don't get it, it is a new cd and they tend to be hard to open. I tried to open it with some tools (originaly it was a large knife but my wife said it looked psycho), things didn't go well and I tried to duct tape the cd back togehter but just gave up and got drunk.

So yes in an effort to keep my spirits up and not spend another week praying for votes to keep me over a 4 avg I went with something boring. It didn't work I am sad to say :( but fear not my cliche' ideas are wicked!

for those complaining about photoshop I have known people that could do some crazy things in a darkroom with "bad" photos.

I agree with you that the concept is missigng the creativity part, but there is definately some learning involved. Learning about the lighting, composition, post processing etc. And that's what I think this site is about - learning. Isn't it?

Yeah < inoticed when I started voting how many flower pics there were! I mean I love macros and flowers as much as the next guy :/ heh but we need some diversity. I took a chance with mine, its an overexposed image to bring out the red and green but damn is it getting knocked, and its not a flower.

I agree with this. My new photo only got comments saying it was funny or that it was a bad picture. I am not very good and I know this so by posting a borring picture I hope to get more comments tellig me how to fix the lighting and what not so I can pull off the crazy ideas.

I beg you pardon!

Being one of the folks that submited a "lackluster and uninspired" floral image I'll tell you this... I did put a part of myself into my composition as I always do with every image I have ever composed in the camera and went on to post process.

I like nature and nature photography and that includes flowers. I take offense at your suggestion that it is not creative and personal. It is both. I like capturing the infinite variety of flora in differing lighting conditions. To capture the great beauty and wonder of nature has always been a primal behavior in photography. That is why you see so many floral presentations at this site. You need to... welllll... wake up and smell the roses. :)

And what the heck is wrong with "copying" someone else's ideas? Every photographer needs to learn style and technique from the great masters before they can add their own positive twist to photo imagery. We always build on the genius of others. You would be well served to study and emulate them.

I wasn't going to submit to the challenge. But it just so happens that I taught a basic Photoshop for photographers workshop at an arboretum last weekend. Before the session I took some pictures for the class. The students picked one of them which I used to demonstrate from loading into the computer to a final post processed output. After later realizing that it featured complementary colors (by challenge definition) I decided to submit it.

Hmmm, sorry dude I tryed for a inspired, orginal, personal image. But judging from the votes Im getting I guess its just average at best.

I sometimes get the feeling that some photos have 'dpchallenge' style. A mix of HeiĆ°a and some others....

/sour grapes and all :)

I'm sorry if I wasn't clear. I'm not knocking flower photos. There are some really nice flower shots in the challenge, that are unique, and I gave a good score to. I'm speaking to those that aren't spending time developing an idea, building a compostion, and putting their own charachter into their work, whether it be flowers or any other subject. This challenge had a ton of redundant mediochre flower pics in it so I was using them as an example. As an enthusiastic photographer and discriminating voter I was issuing a challenge for people to examine their process, and see where they can step up their game. Not trying to insult. Sorry if it came out that way.

i think DPC has a very clear style that's obviously favoured by voters. For instance, well composed, well lit, technically sound photos of interesting/appealing subjects tend to score well. On the other hand, poorly lit, badly photochopped, blurry images of your cat will tend to get lower votes.

People are weird like that on this site.

I agree. It seems that the majority of DPC voters take a very narrow view of the challenge subject and vote to stifle creativity. Imagination not allowed, just do something stock. Despite that, the occasional creative entry does win, but almost invariably meets the challenge description literally. I would like to see the challenges worded more vaguely to permit more latitude. Maybe those literal minded voters would lighten up a bit!

I guess RyShu everyone has their own style, some like to improve on what other have done in the past. Some try for the score the highest possible based on what was seen before on this site. Its not right or wrong it is what it is. I personally take pictures just for me, some are way out there and rather digital art. Some score good some do not. Maybe if you want more people to do what you like, leave them a compliment on their image, saying what you like and what you would improve on. I think it would be far more constructive than a blanket thread saying negitive stuff:)

[quote=karmabreeze] I was going to enter this in CC, but forgot about the basic editing and entered a Neg instead - which is having a supremely disappointing showing so far. Later realized I could have probably gotten a very similar effect through some perfectly legal saturation adjustments. Whaddya think?

The link is incorrect, but you do know that outakes are not permitted while a challenge is being voted on?
