I thought some time ago that I saw a rule that if you entered a photo in a challenge, you had to vote on every photo in the challenge. I can't find that now. Is that a rule? My question is because I have a unique idea for the ground-up challenge, but I am going on vacation this Saturday. I will not have access to the internet for TWO WEEKS! WAAAAAAHHHHH!!! Anyway, may I/should I enter this challenge, knowing I cannot vote or comment? Or should I just skip this one and wait until I come back?

i was under the impression that the rule is that if you submit a photo you have to vote on all of the photos in order for any of your votes to count. so you don't HAVE to vote, but if you vote on just a handful you votes won't count.

We will be enforcing this VERY soon. We took it out of the rules since we hadn't built the system to enforce it yet. It's only fair that if you want people to view and judge your photo that you should vote on the other entries. So, continue to vote on all of the entries -- and we'll have the system in place very shortly.

Drew,

Are you sure this is the best way to go about this? Situations like Melanies will not be all that uncommon. Is it really right to exclude disqualify someone just because they were on vacation?

I'd like to see a way around this, also. I'm forced to travel quite a bit with my job, and it doesn't seem fair to disqualify an entry just because I'm in the middle of nowhere for a while.

I don't have a problem with requiring us to vote on all of them most of the time, but there are some times that we need to bring you a note from Mom telling you that we can't be there. (Even the IRS lets us file late when we're out of the country.)

I don't think this is a very good way to go about it.

First of all, is the number of voters a problem? We had over 200 votes per photo last time. Of course more is better, but I don't think there is currently a problem.

Secondly, assuming there actually is a problem, is requiring people to vote on all photos really the answer? I think 100% voting is certainly not the answer.

In some cases there are some good personal reasons to skip out on voting on a photo or two.

In other cases, when you DQ an image and later unDQ an image, there will be people who at one point voted on all of the photos, but when the unDQd image shows back up they may not notice and hence may end up voting on most, but not all, of the images.

And finally there are people who have other technical/personal/whatever problems which prohibit them from finishing voting (or even from starting) on a rare occasion. Should they really be disqualified?

If anything, you could track the percentage of photos people vote on for challenges in which they participate. Only if that percentage drops below some threshold would a person be DQd from a challenge. The threshold would increase as the number of challenges the user participates in increases. I know a couple of reasonable ways to do this. Email me if you're interested.

I'm not sure that any type of requirement is necessary. If all those who submit photos are required to vote on all photos, it would be easy enough for someone to circumvent this by giving straight 5's, or worse, voting arbitrarily. Those who would not circumvent such a system are probably already voting anyway, so I'm not sure what would be accomplished with the change except inconveniencing a few people with special circumstances.

If a system is that easily circumvented and accomplishes so little, I'm not sure it's worth implementing.

In any case, I certainly agree that the number of voters is suffient already, even with things running under the honor system as they are now. I don't see what the value is in changing that.
