Manzanita is a nice little coastal town.
I've caught some interesting bird shots on Nehalem Bay.
Short Sand Beach is not far away -- there will be surfers there (interesting subjects both on and off the water).
Neakahnie Mtn overlooks Manzanita, and is a nice hike for those that might want to do that -- wildflowers, woods, and a great view at the top.
Cannon Beach is nearby for those that might do an overnighter at the coast.
Pacific City would be fine -- hiking out on Cape Kiwanda can give some interesting views, and there may be hang-gliders on the dune and dories negotiating the surf.

I guess anywhere along the coast works for me. I don't mind driving a ways (my car runs on free used vegetable oil).

I can't make it the weekend of the 20th. But other weekends are open -- I've tentatively penciled in the 13th & 14th.

I'm looking forward to it.

Well, we've got lots of good places to choose from. I guess we just need to make a decision. This could get complicated. :)

How does this sound? I'll pick a date and location, then, if necessary, we can try to adjust it to accommodate anyone that has a problem with my selection. Does that sound okay to you people? Great! I'm glad that you all agree. :)

Therefore, the 3rd Oregon DPC GTG (3RDODPCGTG? OGTG3?) will be...

Date: May 13, 2006
Location: Short Sands Beach, Oregon

For those of you that may not have been there before, Short Sands Beach is part of Oswald West State Park. It's a beautiful, secluded cove surrounded by rugged cliffs, just a short drive south from Cannon Beach. There are large parking areas on both sides of highway 101.

Note: A short (1/4 mile) trail must be negotiated in order to get from the parking area down to the beach itself. The trail is very easy and very well maintained.

Here's a link to a web page with info, maps, and photos...
Short Sands Beach & Oswald West State Park

I can also provide maps and directions if needed.

Becky and I are heading down to the coast tomorrow for a little get-away and to visit with my parents. We'll try to stop by Short Sands to make sure that they haven't moved it or something. :)

Remember, if any of you would prefer a different date or location; please feel free to speak up.

Hullo all.

Shortsand would be pretty sweet, except I have been there a hundred times, hehe. Somewhere new would be more fun to photograph in my opinion. Right now Ima at school in Eugene, but will be home at Cannon Beach over the summer. I have never been to Florence, but it might be too far for others. Just decided what works for everyone else, and I'll try my best to make it. lols.

It might be a good idea to plan an alternate site inland. Anyone that has spent some time on the beaches along there knows how fast wind and rain, not to mention blowing sand and salt spray if the wind is blowing inland, can come up. That's not that big of a deal for most people, but for photographers, the combination doesn't mix with cameras and lenses. I like the coast but I try to limit my visits to when there is no wind (rare) or it's blowing off shore.

The Gorge is good, but most of the falls near the Old Highway are pretty crowded on weekends and those back a ways usually start off with a 700' or higher climb right off the road. If Silverfalls give some of you pause, I'm sure some of these trails would stop you dead.

With Silverfalls you don't need to walk the whole 5 miles. There are several falls at the North end, with the North Falls and Upper North Falls within a half mile of the parking lot. With in 2 miles of mostly level trail is Middle North Falls. All 3 of these falls are good falls to shoot early morning. On the South end, where the main parking lot and park buildings are, is the South Falls. You can see it from up above or walk down the paved (but a bit steep) trail and get some great pictures from below. Both North and South ends could be done in half to 3/4ths of a day depending on how much time you wanted to take taking pictures. Between the Gorge and Silverfalls, I like Silverfalls better because it's less crowded and easier to get to most of the falls. They have some pretty rambunctious Chipmunks at the part as well. For some out of the way falls, the Gorge has some very good ones, but again, you have a very steep climb to get to them. A few aren't too bad. Punch Bowl at Eagle Creek isn't too bad, although it's about 5 miles back in and if you are afraid of heights when on a very narrow trail, this one might not be for you. Most of the Gorge waterfalls have logs in front of the falls too, which ruins it a bit. There was some heavy rain and floods back in 1996 that brought a lot of logs down and they all seem to have landed right in front of the falls. The park service won't move them, and nobody has been able to train the Oregon Beavers to go chew a few of these logs up on command. Silverfalls does limit dogs on most of the trails though, unless they are service dogs. My wife made the whole 5 miles from the North Falls to the South Falls parking lot last fall, but she did have her service dog to pull her up that last half mile of very steep switchbacks at the South side. Lucky me got to carry her camera stuff and mine. We had gone with another photography group and I had made a mistake on the distance looking at the map. What I thought was the whole way was only the half way point. Luckily my wife was too tired to sic her dog on me. And she was too tired anyway.

There are also several spots in Portland as well. There is along the river across from the city that makes for some great morning, evening or night shots. There is Pitcock Mansion that gives a great view of Portland and Mt. Hood. If it wasn't for some trees you could see Mt. St. Helens and Mt. Jefferson as well. You can get some great setting sun light falling on Mt. Hood and city lights coming on type pictures here. Although the park parking lot closes at 9pm and they lock the gate.

May just might be a good time for Hood River. If the Pear and Apple orchirds are in bloom, the Hood River is gorgous. There is also the Mt. Hood train. You can see Mt. Hood and Mt. Adams from this area.

I live in Hillsboro and if work doesn't get in the way like it has on so many other group outings I had wanted to go too, I (and probably my wife) will be interested in showing up for this. I don't know anyone (that I'm aware of in this group) but it's usually a very enjoyable time.

Hey, I think y'all are gonna have to count me out of this one. I will still be at school when the GTG happens.

Maybe when we're there Mick you can show us exactly how you were able to capture your shot for Color Portrait...

Awesome! I'm looking forward to shooting with you guys again.

BTW, I need you to tell me how you got your car to run on vegetable oil. I think it might be cheaper to fill up at Safeway. :)

No wind or offshore wind, eh? You must be thinking of southern California. :) I love SoCal surfing with the Santa Ana winds blowing. Makes some awesome tubes!

Seriously, Becky and I were at the coast yesterday and the weather was beautiful. I can't guarantee that it'll be like that for the GTG, but I'm willing to chance it. Heck, if it rains, maybe we can just have a party in Bills RV. :)

C'mon dude, what's more important, a college education or yet another virtual ribbon? :)

Don't sweat it Ryan. I'm sure there will be other GTGs.

What, you actually fell for that? Exactly what type of doctor are you anyway?

RFLMAO!

I'm sorry about that Jason. I hope my little jest didn't deflate you too much. :)

Haha, no all in good fun. During the scam I was even going to leave a comment, "wow Mick, looking at your portfolio I don't even see a portrait, you must have caught lightning in a bottle". The only thing it did was make me more surprised that I won a ribbon. I knew Kiwiness was ahead of me and I knew Larus and Hopper were really close. I figured you were up there in first and so I'd likely come in about 5th. Made for a good surprise.

Actually, I do have a few portraits in my portfolio. The photo of my son Troy that I entered in the first Color Portrait challenge wasn't very good, so I wanted to come up with a good shot for this one. Unfortunately, I didn't have the time or a model to shoot. I thought about doing a self-portrait, but decided you people didn't deserve to be so mistreated.

BTW, congratulations on your ribbon. It's really a terrific image.

So, are you going to be able to make it to OGTG3? I'm sure we would all like to meet the great DrAchoo in person.

I'd say there's a 75% chance I'm in. Being a father of small kids, that's always subject to change, but I'm planning on it at this point.

Hey, that's Great! I hope you can make it.

BTW, don't expect it to get much better when they're older. It might even get worse as they get older. :)

That be true. Been living the busy college life.

Sorry, been out of the DPC loop for a while (enter a photo here and there), but haven't been watching threads much. May 12th is the last day of finals for me, so I might be in Cannon Beach that day or driving back on Saturday. (But I think we'll drive back on Friday). We could shoot at Short Sands and Cannon Beach. I haven't talked to my parents yet, but I'm sure they'd be fine with hosting. I think I'll be able to make it though.

Okay folks, I will update the first post in this thread if anything changes, so stay tuned.
